Need help planning child-friendly road trip of northern california/oregon

We are considering a 5-6 day road trip with our kids, 10 and 8. Want to go to Redwood Forest for sure and are trying to figure out what else to do. Any ideas?

Mid to end of August. One way. I'm loosely thinking SF, Redwood Forest, Cannon Beach, San Juan Islands. Or instead of San Juan Islands, maybe Crater Lake?? Having a hard time getting advice, so any would be appreciated!

Where do you recommend staying near the Redwood Forest? The Requa Inn looks lovely but maybe not so great for 8-10 year olds? And I have no idea if they have rooms available.

THANK YOU!

If you are starting out in SF, just go across the GG bridge and see Muir Woods. They are just as impressive as the ones you drive hundreds of miles to go see near Crescent City.
After seeing Muir Woods and San Francisco, head east on I-80 and then north on I-5 to Medford Oregon. Spend a night there unless you can get a reservation at the lodge on the rim of Crater Lake. Exit Crater Lake by the north entrance and take Rt. 138 to Roseburg and I-5. Go north to Eugene and take 126 west to the coast. Spend a night near Newport and see the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Continue north to Cannon Beach to see Haystack Rock.

My boys LOVED counting the bridges that we went over! 9 When we drove from SAnta Maria, CA through San Francisco, over to the 5 and up to Ashland and then over to the coast and back down we crossed something like 33 briddges... they still talk about it!

Also, the Shasta Caverns are literally two minutes off of the 5 on your right and were a highlight of our trip! The story of how the cavers were discovered is quite interesting, the fact tht they flooded an actual town to create the lake was amazing and the boat ride to and from the caverns is fun. Again, still talked about often... not expensive and well worth it to take a few hours to learn and enjoy!

Have a wonderful time!

You might look at the Trinidad Inn - close to the town of Trinidad - for a night. Nice place for family, most of the rooms had kitchens, staff very helpful in planning activities , there are BBq's for guest use- no fabulous views - just a quiet, clean little motel.

This is an old folks forum. Don't know if you'll get the answers you're looking for.
