Need help on weekend trip in New England
 

My boyfriend and I would like to get away for the weekend. However, it's supposed to rain on Sunday. We live just outside of Boston and for the life of me, I can't think of anywhere fairly close by (within 3 hours or so) to go where there are interesting things to do inside (no malls please). Anyone have any suggestions?

It takes me around 3 hours to get to New York. How about that?<BR><BR>Otherwise New Haven has a number of great museums and inside stuff, though it is a crappy town.

How about the casinos? Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun. NYC is a great idea too. The Berkshires in a B&B, quaint shops & antiquing. Sort of hard to help when you don't list ideas for certain areas of New England and your interests. If you're just bored at home or stuck in a rut, why not get a room at the Bostonian for the weekend and do everything you always said you wanted to do in Boston?

Thanks for the suggestions! Please keep them coming. The reason for the getaway is that my boyfriend is super stressed from work. I just think we'd be bored with only relaxing and not doing anything. Museums or anything like that would be good. Also, trying to keep the expenses down.<BR>Thanks!

I've heard the kayak race in Webster NH is fun to watch and will be held rain or shine. There's a Neil Simon play in Concord Fri and Sat night, check the events in the newspaper for anything that might interest you<BR>www.concordmonitor.com. Sometimes you just have to put on rain gear and it doesn't mean you'll have a lousy time. If you would rather see a movie than comedy, check out Chunky's up in Tilton. The movie seats are from Lincoln town cars and you sit at tables. The food is pretty bad but you can have beer and nachos. Get there about an hour before the show starts. In Concord there's the McAuliffe Planetarium, NH Museum of History, and some very nice downtown Main St shops. Go to Bread and Chocolate for the best pastries. If you decide to pack a picnic lunch, go to In A Pinch on Pleasant St up near the high school. Great soups!!!! (Bring your own thermos.) and very good sandwiches. They open very early and close by 5. Not sure if they're open on Sundays. If you have bikes, there's a paved bike trail thru Concord. If you like to cook, visit the new shop Ingredients in New London NH. If Canterbury Shaker Village is open for the season for guided tours, they are very interesting. You can take an easy hike up Mt Kearsarge. We really need the rain, don't let it spoil your weekend.

You know what they say about weather in new England: if you don't like it, wait a minute. So, it may not rain on Sunday. My suggestion: book a room at the Bedford Village Inn in Bedford, NH; have dinner at either/or both Baldwins on Elm or Cotton, both in Manchester. Spend an afternoon at The Currier, also in Manchester. If you still have time to spare, drive up to Shaker Village near Concord; or over to Portsmouth and walk around town.

Maybe you could go to a hotel in Boston and pretend to be tourists. I would bet that there are a dozens of things in Boston that you've never done (if you're anything like most of the people around here). Like brunch at the Museum of Fine Arts, see the glass flowers exhibit at Harvard, the Isabelle Stuart Gardner museum, the sports museum, the new Imax theater at the aquarium. I bet there is a hot restaurant that you've been wanting to try. <BR><BR>I suggest this because just last night my husband and I were trying to think of what to do with the kids for a summer vacation. As we talked about what we wanted we realized that most of it was available right here in Boston. And we never take advantage of it. Like a whale watch, Sturbridge Village, minature golf, bringing the kids to the art museums in Boston. None of us have ever walked the Freedom Trail or gone to the US Constitution. You get the point. It might just be a great vacation.

How about Newport? The mansions are very interesting. I'm sure you could get a good price on a B&B this time of year.
