Need HELP in lodging/SW Oregon/N. CA coast
 

We are looking for recommended lodging along the SW Oregon coast and the N. CA Redwoods area the 2nd week of May.<BR>All I seem to come up with are the typical franchises.<BR>Any suggestions? Also, must see places?<BR>Thanks!<BR>

My husband and I stayed in a wonderful house rental just north of Gold Beach, Oregon called &quot;The Beach House at Sprit Cove&quot;. It's a great spot. It's really worthi it if you want to splurge. You have the beach practically to yourself and the house is fantastic. Immaculate and lovely. We also stayed in Bandon, Orgeon overlooking Face Rock Beach. That's a great spot. Try to get a cottage on the beach side of the highway. We stayed in a funky cabin with the best view I've ever seen. Also loved the drive between Gold Beach and Brookings. Have a great trip!

Check out the National Park Lodge at the Oregon Caves National Monument in southern Oregon. It's a little way from the coast, but is way cool, and there are great tours of the largest marble cave in the world,plus hikes. We stayed there on our trip up the coast and wished we'd have more time.<BR><BR>http://www.nps.gov/orca/

OK so I can't find first part of previous message--I think I pressed wrong button..Coos Bay is 1/2 hour north of of Bandon.<BR>Bandon has cute little cheese factory right on main drag-good cheese.The beach is great for walking--provided you allow for occas. wind and rain.<BR>Crescent City is directly north of the spectactular Redwoods. Unfortunately I have never stayed there but have heard several motels are quite adequate.<BR>Good luck...<BR>

Crescent City's sole advantage is its location. Motels run the gamut from so-so to okay; restaurants - well...<BR><BR>A little south of the main Redwood groves (but not all) and off US 101 is the cute little town of Ferndale, gateway to the Lost Coast. Various Victorian storefronts, B&amp;Bs, etc. See http://www.victorianferndale.org/chamber/history.htm Somewhat off the beaten path, but probably the most attractive town in the NW Calif/SW Oregon region. Close enough to Eureka that you can go for a belly-buster meal at the Samoa Cookhouse, former mill mess hall, now a restaurant/museum with hearty food served by your grannie. Another off-the-coast suggestion, but the jetboats up the Rogue River start running around May 1. And if you go up the Rogue, you wouldn't regret spending a night or two at Tu Tu' Tun Lodge.

Brookings and GB are pretty touristy, as are most of the Oregon coast towns up to Coos Bay, which is anything but. Bandon would be my pick for an overnight on the south coast. The Mill Casino/Hotel in Coos Bay is okay but the hotel overpriced IMO; besides, their slots owe me lots of money.
