Depending on your budget, take a look at The Pacific Terrace Hotel. Upscale on the beach (separated by a seawall), heated pool, large rooms. They were running a special for May with room under $200 a night. Was there a year ago and enjoyed it very much. If that is too expensive, you should be able to find a more motel like place by searching the web.

what's your budget?

Thanks for your replies. I did look at the Pacific Terrace and although it is beautiful, I think it's a tad bit out of our price range. We were looking for something in the realm of $150-200 a night. The PT had rooms at that price range, but without ocean views. Do you think it would still be worth it?
Thanks again for your help!

You might Try the Catamaran. They are on the beach and I think are in your price range.
Other options:
Carlsbad Inn
La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club
L'Auberge Del Mar
without an ocean view, i don't know if i'd go for the terrace.
i like the catamaran although it may be too pricy too. fact is everything close to the beach is $$$$$.
if you don't mind staying in la jolla (slightly further drive to everything) you may want to try the best western inn by the sea. it is not on the ocean but a short 2-5 minute walk to be by the coastline or downtown la jolla that has lots of shops & restaurants. i think they offer free continental breakfast so that will save you a few dollars each day.
you might want to check out some of the vacation rentals on mission beach. they may have a small unit available in your price range but then you have to do your own cleaning and no pool, hot tub etc.

I just got back from San Diego last week. We stayed in Pacific Beach at the Ocean Park Inn. Located right on the boardwalk at the foot of Grand Avenue, it is surrounded by shops and restaurants, and the beach is right out the door. Also it includes continental breakfast each morning.
We booked with Fun Sun Tours in Canada and got the 4th nite free. A much better buy than booking direct.
For hotel info check out
www.oceanparkinn.com

Crystal Pier Hotel is an idea for you. It is actually ON the pier in Pacific Beach and is pretty nice. The phone number is (858)483-6983. All cottages look out on the water and the ocean comes right under the pier. Good luck.

I just booked a room at the Pacific Terrace for April and I got a great deal with the Entertainment card - 50% off the rack rates.

The Catamaran on Mission Bay is a great place to stay. You walk out the back of the hotel and have access to a gorgeous
water area. There is a jogging/bike path. La Jolla is just up the road. We went to one of the La Jolla beaches and it is also a fabulous area to stay. I can't say enough good things about the San Diego!

WOW! I can't thank you all enough! What a wealth of knowledge. I will check it all out. I really do appreciate your help :)

The Catamaran is not as nice as made out in some posts. I'm used to quality chains like the Hyatts, Marriots, Loews. I checked out of the Catamaran with my family and into the Hyatt because the hotel seemed run down and was no where near the quality that I expected. It was also very noisy.

thanks to everyone who replied. I used all of your advice. It was a really hard choice, but I went with Ocean Park Inn. It's in the area I want to be in and having the beach out my door is pretty important to me. Thanks again!
