Need current info on Goose Cove Lodge on Deer Isle, Maine

My husband and I (in our 60's) are going to a wedding on Deer Isle, Maine this summer and will be joined by our son & daughter-in-law and their dog for the weekend. The two places to stay that are recommended by the wedding couple are in Stonington: the Goose Cove Resort and the Inn on the Harbor. One perk to staying at either of these places is that there will be a transportation shuttle for wedding guests between the wedding/reception site and the lodgings, and we'd like to take advantage of that. Of the two places based on website pictures, we would prefer to stay at Inn on the Harbor but they do not allow pets.

Goose Cove Resort (it used to be called Goose Cove Lodge), according to their website is under new management but not sure when that happened. From the pictures, it looks pretty rustic, which I am OK with as long as it is clean. One concern is that most of the cabins don't seem to have enough privacy for us, i.e., beds are in the main living area or in an alcove with only a curtain for privacy. The reviews on Trip Advisor are quite mixed, with some very negative comments of late, which made us a little nervous.

I couldn't find any postings/replies on this forum since 2006 so I would like to hear from anyone who has stayed at Goose Cove in the past couple of years. What did you think of the accommodations? Is there a particular cabin you'd recommend and why? How is the food in the restaurant? Would you recommend it? We would appreciate your honest feedback.

Also, both my husband & daughter-in-law have knee problems so please let us know how much walking would be required to get to the cottages and restaurant and if the terrain is uneven or steep.

We would also consider staying somewhere else on Deer Isle renting a cottage or vacation home if anyone can recommend anything they know of that is nice and pet friendly.

Thanks for your help.

Apparently only the view is still what it used to be: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...sle_Maine.html

Yes, happytrailstoyou, that Trip Advisor review is what prompted me to post my desire for feedback from my fellow Fodorites on this forum. Hoping to hear directly from folks on this forum who have stayed at Goose Cove in the last couple of years. Trip Advisor reviews are not always reliable.

Oakland House Cottages by the Side of the Sea (http://www.oaklandhouse.com/) accepts dogs in two cottages this summer. They're about two miles from the Deer Isle Bridge. Check out their website or give them a call at 207-359-8521 for more info.

Thanks for your responses. We ended up staying in the largest cottage at Goose Cove so there were 2 bedrooms with twin beds, and a queen bed off the dining/living area with only a curtain for privacy. It was OK, but a little tired and worn looking. We ended up being so busy with wedding activities that we really only slept there and made our own breakfast there.
