What street is this hotel on? I can't exactly picture it, but I'm sure it's not near the popular Gaslamp District.

It's at 1541 Pacific Highway

Pacific Highway is not one of the best areas of town. Be aware that the main railway track from San Diego to Los Angeles runs behind most of the hotels there, so try to avoid a room in the back of the hotel.

Jennifer,<BR>Personally, I wouldn't want to stay here. This isn't a great location for downtown attractions and though it's close to the harbor, it can be a little seedy at night esp. Have you looked at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites? They are located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter walking distance to pretty much all of downtown. I'm pretty sure they are reasonable.

I know this is an old post, but I just stayed at the HI-Downtown SD and it isn't in the rants/raves sections and wanted to share, so I'm posting here.

Free airport van. Van also may be available to take you other places in downtown if not on airport duty. Parking charge $10/day.

Trolley stop one block (behind hotel) for blue line, but to get to Convention Center area it is often faster to walk rather than have to transfer to orange line, especially at night when some trolley lines only every half hour. Taxi prices also reasonable.

Train tracks are right behind hotel so horns sounded at crossings every half hour or so through the night--rooms face parallel to tracks, none opposite tracks, so you are bound to hear it--bring ear plugs.

Not much in the neighborhood--Jack in the Box and other motels. Two blocks to waterfront. Pretty deserted on streets except when trolley arrives, but not exactly seedy.

Great continental breakfast of English muffins, bagels, french toast, fruit, yogurt, etc.

Wonderful staff. I don't when I have met such enthusiastic front desk, maintenace, van, and breakfast staff. Everyone wants to do whatever they can to make you happy at this hotel. I was really impressed by this staff.
