need Colorado cabin rental...
 

Looking for a great cabin to rent 1st week of June..Looking for non-touristy area..prefer mountains, lots of trees, near a river or stream, and somewhere near where we could possibly rent 4 wheelers or go river rafting..Any recommendations?

Pretty much anywhere in Colorado is going to meet your standards. I second the Grand Lake suggestions, esp. because it's not too touristy. Southern Colorado has some great places, I really like the Sand Dunes (where you can't go four-wheeling, but I have friends who take their old snow-boards or surf boards and surf down the sand).

Colorado is a pretty big state with lots of great places that would fit your bill.

Are you flying in or driving in? Price range [in CO, some cabins are rustic/basic and some are rustic/big bucks.

Do you want to be within some facilities [restaurants]; do you want to go to National Parks?

Give a bit more info and get more suggestions.

Driving in from Texas..have 1 week..Like areas that have lots of beautiful green trees (evergreens?), rivers, streams, etc..Modest budget...Not looking for the type of cabin where there is a whole community of cabins....like the feel of national parks, etc...

SW Colorado would work very well for you. Not sure how long it would take you from your part of TX to Albuquerque, but from ABQ to Durango area is 3 hours.

There are some nice cabins along SR 145 in the Dolores area. [45 minutes from Durango]..They are on the Dolores River. Lots of trees. Rafting would be avaiable in Durango.

Lots of mountains, too.

Cabins in this area would be way cheaper than more popular areas of CO. Small towns, nice people. Near Mesa Verde NP, a must if you are in area.

Unfortunately, Colorado's high country has been hit hard by the pine beetle, which has killed much of the Ponderosa pines in our green forests.

So, as you're checking out certain locations, ask them about the beetle kill. I think Grand Lake-- which is one of my all-time favorite places-- has been hit. We also like Snow Mountain Ranch, YMCA of the Rockies, which is between Winter Park and Granby. It has removed a bunch of trees, so at least you don't see the dead, brown ones.

We were in Grand Lake on NY Day and it was beautiful.

Mambo is correct. The pine beetle has destroyed over 660,000 acres of pine trees in Grand County. It is so so sad. I read reports over Christmas that it has spread to Vail, Breckenridge, and several other places.

We have a place in Winter Park and spend 2 months there every summer. My hikes will still be lovely this summer, but my trees will be missing or brown.

All of that said....Grand Lake would be my choice for a remote location. Small town. Good food. Local theatre company. Just outside RMNP.
