need clean air and mountains?
 

Hi Everyone, I am wondering if anyone can suggest a small town with mountain views. We are looking to live with less stuff, less chaos- to hopefully gain more (inner peace and more time to play). We presently live outside a big city on the East Coast- but would like to move to a smaller town with views of mountains, and breathe clean mountain air. We are open to all ideas. Looking for low crime small towns. Any thoughst would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Woodstock, VA. Located off I-81 between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. Pop just over 4000.About an hour and a half from IAD.

wow...there's lots to consider. Do you need to work? [[pay cuts] What are your professions? Children in school? And those are for starters.

I moved from Westchester County, just outside of NYC to Albuquerque in 2001. And from there moved to SW Colorado, near Durango, last year.

It is a huge change. Have you ever been out this way? That would be first thing I would suggest -- visit some places and see what you think.

We live in a small town and near some amazing mountains and sights [Mesa Verde is but one] but it takes adjustments...no malls or shopping centers within 45 miles, smaller budget schools, everyone knows everyone else and often their business [if you know what I mean].

I visited NM 3 times, in different seasons, to see how it felt, before committing to the move.

I still miss NY and now even ABQ seems like a "big city" to me.

Yes, we are considering Virginia. I will look into Woodstock. Also, I have heard wonderful things about Durango- but, I think, at heart, I am an East Coast girl. Thanks for the replies!

to answer a few questions, yes we have two small children. My husband now has an exec. job, but I have offered for him to cut back to part time and try writing (his passion), while I start teaching- something I could surely do anywhere.

Ronkala- Can you tell me which county Woodstock is located in?

Just a heads up regarding a view. A lot of towns in NH and maybe other states are now taxing the view via property taxes. Since NH has neither sales tax nor income tax, property taxes are getting very expensive. Since you have children, I would recommend you look for an area with a great 4-H program. No, you don't have to live on a farm or have animals. 4-H usually provides some travel opportunities for older children. Some do have animals, make their hobby into a career, and travel the world (i.e. Drew Conroy - Tillers International).

Woodstock is in Shenandoah County in the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley. We are thirty five minutes south of Winchester and forty five minutes north of Harrisonburg.

We moved here (retired) from the Fairfax area seven years ago and never regretted doing it.

There are loads of possibilities in Washington State; we have two mountain ranges--the Cascades and the Olympics.

Unfortunately, the foothills attract rain clouds.

I would go for a place in Kitsap County with a view of the Olympics. Or, if you like funky, you can't do better than the town of Index, about 50 miles north of Seattle. The old town has a great mountain setting.

When we lived on the east coast we thought that those hills were mountains, too. Bottom line is that there are no mountains east of the Mississippi.
