need Anchorage hotel

Arrive in the evening at the airport, leave early the next morning for a cruise so we are looking for a suggestion for a hotel within walking distance of the Sheraton where we catch the cruise bus. Prefer not too pricey but clean and adequate for just one night. Fodorites are so helpful, thanks.

Days Inn is the closest but I have no personal experience.

321 E. Fifth Avenue

We've stayed at the Days Inn in Anchorage - it was the cheapest down town we could find. It was OK, clean enough and we could walk to down town attractions. I think it would suit you. It is, as I recall, a few blocks from the Sheraton. With roll-on bags, you could walk it.

we also stayed at the Days Inn and thought it was ok. Easy walk to downtown but not if carrying a bag - rolling would be ok

As a suggestion, I do not recommend you take the "cruise bus" to Seward. Frankly, I am assuming, you didn't have a lot of time and am compromising with this timeframe for your Alaska trip??

IF you want to make the MOST of it, ditch the bus and get yourself up early and on the Alaska RR for the Seward transportation. This gets in about 11am, also grossly superior scenery compared to the Seward Highway.

This then allows you to take a Kenai Fjords boat trip, a "must do" in my opinion, and also grossly superior to ANYTHING from your cruiseship for wildlife and glacier viewing. Make the most of your trip and very short timeframe.

I certainly am making assumptions that people are coming to Alaska for wildlife and scenery and seeing the most, so no flames please. :)

Dear Budget, Thanks so much for your good idea. Actually we are taking a 3 day cruise on a small ship, Colombia, out of Whittier to see the wildlife & glaciers. We have planned several days on the Kenai peninsula going to Kenai & Homer. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have to agree with what Budget Queen has to say. I did basically what she says. The Alaska RR trip was wonderful and the Kenai Fjords AWESOME ... Not to be missed. It was my first trip to Alsaka and was a fantastic start. The main difference was I was on a cruise tour with the land portion first and left from the Anchorage Hilton. A bit pricy for a single person, so I stayed at a nearby very nice hotel, The ANCHORAGE GRAND. This hotel is more like a suite or small apartment. It sits right above the train station so I just walked across the lovely grass back and forth to the train. I just walked up the hill to the Hilton to join my cruise/tour the 2nd morning.

Enjoy Alaska!
