Need advise !!! Shops at Georgetown Park or....
 

I will visit Washington DC, and from the web I have found that there is a shopping centre called Shops at Georgetown Park. Please advise is it expensive? Are there any other places for good , not expensive shopping for a whole family (not souvienirs) clothes, shoes for men and women and children.

The Shops at Georgetown Park are likely to be expensive. If you are looking for clothes, I would try Filenes and H&M.

The stores in the Georgetown Park Mall are mixed -- no discount stores or huge bargains, but some moderately priced stores to more expensive. Georgetown itself has the typical chains such as Banana Republic, the Gap etc. as well as some small stores. Filenes and H&M offer some good buys.

Are you looking for brand-name or designer-label clothes at a discount (I guess Ross Stores, TJ Maxx, Marshall's), or are you looking for trendy-looking, but not particularly high-quality clothes (H&M, Zara, even Target, and the like), or something in-between (Macy's and its ilk)?

Hi everyone who responded. Thanks for your replies. In fact I am not looking for designer label clothes. Could you tell me where are Macy's and Fileness? H&M in Geneva was not of a high quality, but the prices were affordable and I was able to find some really good things for my son. As I assume, the big shopping malls are expencive in Washington ?

To find Macy's, TJMAXX, Marshalls, etc, you will need to go to the 'burbs. In Georgetown, there are boutique shops and then there are chains like J. Crew and Lucky Jeans, Polo and Banana Republic. Many of these shops have great sale items. All these shops are within walking distance of each other on M Street and Wisconsin Ave.

There is a Macy's in Downtown DC and a TJ Maxx way up Wisconsin Avenue in the last block of DC before Maryland. Both can be found on the store locator section of their websites.

Both primarily sell crapola made in China which can be purchase anywhere and make me wonder why anyone would waste time in a interesting city shopping for crapola made in China.

There is a Filene's downtown at 14th St NW and F St. There is also one in Mazza Gallerie on Wisconsin Ave in Friendship Heights -- about a 10 minutes ride on the metro Red Line from Metro Center. This is also where TJ Maxx is located. The area has 2 shopping malls and several strip malls with a variety of stores from very expensive to chains like Banana Republic, the Gap, etc. There is a place called Stein Mart which sells discount clothes also. Don't know anything about it.

There is a good Filene's Basement south of Dupont at 1133 Connecticut Ave NW. The H&M in Georgetown is pretty bad - I like the one in Chinatown better. You could take the metro to Pentagon City if you want to do more mall shopping -- there is a wide range of shops there.

The easiest shopping mall to visit near Washington, DC, is Pentagon City. Stop is Pentagon City on the Metro.

The merchandise sold in the Pentagon City Mall is the same you would find anywhere except that the t-shirts (all made in China) say "Washington, D.C."

My personal favorite shopping place in the DC area is Potomac Mills outlet center. Yes...the traffic getting there is a pain (depending on the time of day) but there are some great store!

Yes, it is a mall, but if you don't have a car, you want to go to Pentagon City.

Without a car Pentagon City would be your best bet for a mall. It's right on a metro line. Tyson's Corner has 2 large malls, but as stated not accessible without a car. In gneral all the malls in the area have pretty much the same stores.

The zone fare system in DC has been replaced by meters since 5/1/08.

Tysons Corner is in northern Virginia. About 15 miles from your hotel. Based on fares on the 2nd chart, it's about $25. I don't know about fares going back from Virginia to DC, whether it's the same or not.

As rkkwan said, taxis in DC used to charge by a zoned system, but now they have regular meters that charge by distance, just like most other cities.

Have you checked the web sites for the malls at Tyson's and at Pentagon City, to make sure that the taxi ride is worthwhile? Most malls in the US have the same stores. There's also a lot of shopping and a mall at the Friendship Heights Metro stop in Chevy Chase including the Chevy Chase pavilion right on top of the station, another mall called the Mazza Gallery, and assorted other stores. It would help if we know what type of shopping you're interested in and your budget. We can't help wondering where you're from!
