Need advice on where to stay in D.C.otel

I'm going to be in Washington, DC for 2 weeks at the end of January. I'm going for training at the National Archives. I'm a female and will be by myself. I'm looking for a safe hotel close to a metro stop. I would really appreciate any advice. Thanks.

The Omni Shoreham and Marriott Wardman Park are both located near Connecticut Ave. NW and about 25th Street (I don't think either hotel's address is on Conn. Ave though). The Nat'l Zoo metro stop is 1-2 blocks away (the Zoo itself is about 6 blocks away). I think it would be very safe for a single woman to walk between these hotels and the metro stop. Also there are a number of moderately priced restaurants on Conn. Ave. that serve a variety of different "ethnic" foods - India, Lebanon, etc. This is more of a residential area of DC so the only tourist attraction within walking distance is the Nat'l Zoo. Everything else would be a metro ride away.

Melissa - The zoo area is nice but some distance from where you'll be in training. Since you'll be at Archives (near the Mall, I assume), you may want to stay closer. Check out Hotel Washington on 15th Street, near Treasury and the White House. There are a number of good restaurants nearby. If you'd like, send me an e-mail and I'll check in some of my DC guidebooks - for example, one book provides hotels by location in the city. I work in downtown DC and have to suggest hotels to people frequenty. You can easily walk to Archives in 10-12 minutes, and that's easier than taking the red line near the zoo and then changing to yellow/green, to use Metro to Archives. Look at a Metro map to see what I mean. Anyway, send me an e-mail and I'll be glad to help you.

We stayed at the JW Marriott on Pennsylvania Ave across from the Willard. (I think it's 14th St? - just a couple of blocks up from the Mall.) It was a 10-15 minute walk straight down Pennsylvania, past the Old Post Office Tower (with its food court and great view) to the back entrance of the Archives, where we went to do genealogical/military research. Great location.
