need advice on hotel near E. 10th St. NYC

I'm looking for some hotel advice in the East 10th Street area near St. Mark's church. Budget priced but decent would be ideal, but I'm interested in anything nearby. Thanks!

YOu might look it up in the yellow pages online. I don't know of any hotels that I would want to stay at in that area. There could be a few B&B's in the area, and I'll check on that for you.

The closest I can think of is on Lex Ave and 30th St and it's a Comfort Inn, I think.

I used to live on 22nd St and 1st Ave, and can not think of any hotels in south of that area, but will check.

Wantsomesun, do you know anything about the Union Square Inn? I found it on a search of the NYU site under their listing of hotels for visitors. It's a bit north of East Village, but maybe it's as close as I can get.

Union Square Inn is on 14th Street btw/ 2nd & 3rd Ave. Not a bad location if you want to be near E. 10th Street.

I've passed it many times, but have no idea what it's like to stay there. I'll stop in and have a peek next time I'm in the area.

If you are trying to visit NYU, I can help you. I am a former student of NYU. I wouldn't recommend St. Marks HOtel, if that is the hotel you were referring to. I have heard that it is seedy inside and the area can get rowdy at night.

Union square is a great area to stay and is still walking distance to NYU and St. Marks area.
Here are some options:
W Union Square (I hardly doubt this a budget option though!)

Union Square INN

Marcel HOtel

thirty thirty HOtel (midtown)

Washington Square HOtel

Here are a bunch of choices. You should read reviews on tripadvisor.

The Union Square Inn gets not bad reviews on tripadvisor
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev..._New_York.html

Second Home on Second is a slightly closer option. It would be about 4 blocks away (14 st on Second) It gets good reviews on tripadvisor. It only has 7 rooms, only 2 of which have private baths.

The Howard Johnson Express is another option on the corner of East Houston and 2nd ave.

The Washington Square is reasonably close (2 blocks south but further west than the other options) but I think it's pricey relative to what you get. It's a "pretty" location though vs the others which are more gritty areas.

Off Soho Suites is yet another about 10 blocks south of the church below Houston St.

The newest (and I think furthest away)place in the area is Hotel Rivington (or Hotel on Rivington). It only has one review on tripadvisor (positive). It's a new skyscraper. It looks like prices start at $225.

There are a lot more options if you're willing to stay a bit further north in the 20s or low 30s east side. The Park South Hotel (parksouthhotel.com) on 28 & Park Ave. south would be a 20 minute walk and has some great 2 and 3 night packages that come to about $200/night including breakfast and some extra.

I didn't see rv224's post before I posted. The Park South is actually a few blocks closer (and I think maybe nicer) than the Hotel thirty thirty.

I forgot to mention the Knickerbocker Bar and Grill is in this area and often has great jazz and decent food.

Thanks everyone, for the help. I'm hoping to book something today since the trip is in a week. Right now I'm leaning toward the Union Square Inn. Can anyone comment on the neighborhood for a single woman traveling alone?.... (by the way, not a shrinking violet!!)

missjanna Jan 21st, 2005 06:39 AM

Well the area is fine for a single woman, especially one who is not a shrinking violet!! The places closest that I can think of is Heartland Brewery in Union Square, No Name Bar on 19th by Madison, Bar None on 3rd by 12th St and of course, the famous Webster Hall, which is one of the biggest dance clubs in NY.
If you want to get together for a drink in the area, I'll be game, provided you're not coming next week!

Mclaurie mentioned Second Home on Second. Does anyone have an web address or phone number for this hotel? I found the tripadvisor review (which is great) but none of the links get me to an actual hotel page or even to a booking page. Again, thanks everybody!

dont know any hotels in that area but know of a fantastic restaurant on east 9th street and 2nd avenue called vaselkas prices are ok and the food is fantastic

gummo66 Jan 21st, 2005 07:43 AM

I think you mean Veselka, right? Great restaurant with excellent Polish/Ukranian food. Well worth a visit (and it's cheap).

GoTravel Jan 21st, 2005 07:52 AM

I'll third Park South but beware, the rooms are teeny tiny. Gorgeous boutique hotel and the restaurant, Black Duck (or something like that) is pretty good also.

Fantastic location.

I met some people that got booked into the Union Square Inn by their agents--convention week and the agent didn't realize it. Anyway, they said the room was small and there was no place to put anything. No closets. No hooks on the wall to hang anything. No suitcase rack. No shelf in the bathroom for toiletries. Difficult for a couple traveling together. They were very happy it was only one night. Still, it could work for one person fine.

ANother possibility is the Howard Johnson Express Inn on E. Houston St (about 10 blocks from E. 10th). It's a fairly new property and gets good reviews on tripadvisor.

Union Square is within easy walking distance of St. Mark's, as is Gramercy Park.

Margie Jan 21st, 2005 01:13 PM

Use this for Second Home on Second Ave: http://secondhome.citysearch.com

Elizabeth Jan 21st, 2005 05:40 PM

Do you have to be very very close to St Mark's Church? If not I have seen advertisements for low rates at the Gramercy Park Hotel, which is one neighborhood over - take a look at a map.

St Mark's Hotel - I don't know the inside but I don't think you'd like it there. I love St Mark's place but it is riff-raffy & kiddie-ish. That hotel used to be a crack prostitute place but I believe it is no longer. But still.
Ok for male European youth, I'd say.

That whole part of town is entirely safe & very lively all night long.

mclaurie Jan 22nd, 2005 03:37 AM

As others say, the neighborhood is fine on all of these. The Union Square Inn is sort of a step up from a hostel, meaning, as someone wrote, it's a private room with bath but not much else. If you can get one of the rooms with private bath at Second Home...that would be nicer I think. If it's only for 1 or 2 nights, any of them will probably do but if for more time, I'd urge you to pick a nicer place.

I just checked easyclicktravel.com for next weekend and they have the Clarion Park Ave. for $99/night including continental breakfast. It gets good reviews on tripadvisor. (It's right near the Park South.) It may not be as close to the church as you wanted, but it's a real hotel. BTW, they have the Marcel which someone else mentioned for $109 but it gets dreadful reviews on tripadvisor and I would not stay there.
