Need advice on BNB's near VNP

My husband and I are going on our delayed honeymoon in December and will be staying in Kona on a package. We decided that we would find a BNB near Volcano National Park for a couple of nights to avoid driving back and forth.

I have been doing lots of research on BNB and am liking the looks of Carson's Cottages and the Country Goose BNB. Does anybody have any experience with either of these? Or another recommendation for a BNB at or under $110 or so.

Thanks in advance!

Carol, I just told in another post how much my husband and I enjoyed staying at Country Goose B&B last week. (just a few minutes outside the park) We had the queen room for $83.57 with all the taxes included. Joan Earley has a lovely home at the edge of the fern forest with lots of flowers, and her gourmet breakfasts keep you from being hungry until evening. She had flowers, cans of soft drinks and chocolates in our room, plus flashlights, rainwear, and a large container of bottled water.

We stayed at Carson's Country Cottages in May. The breakfasts were delicious and we enjoyed playing in the outdoor hottub at night. It's not the nicest B&B I've ever stayed in, but it was clean, comfortable, and convenient. My only complaint (and this is silly because it's in a rainforest) is that it was a bit musty, but with that much moisture, I'm sure everything is. We stayed in Nick's Cabin, by the way, and we were there for our honeymoon, too.

There was no musty smell at Country Goose, because we had a new dehumidifier in the room that we could control as we did the heat. It was not our honeymoon; however. we were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. My husband was delighted with the large cable TV and tapes available. She told us that she also has other rental property nearby, but we did not see them. It was nice to have a private entrance from the garden. You need two nights near the park to see it without rushing around, and watching the steam curl over the caldera edges at sunset was memorable. Small wild orchids grow along the paths. We really enjoyed everything.

Jean and Jenny, thanks for the information. It sounds like we wouldn't go wrong with either location. I have requests in for availabilty for both places, so it might just depend on that.

We are planning on staying two nights there so that we can see everything we want to see. It will be a nice break from the hotel we're staying at in Kona, which isn't much of anything, but was affordable for us.

Thanks for the info!

You might also look at Hi'aka House. (website: www.volcanoplaces.com) We stayed there in March with our two children and for the four of us the rate was $125.00. Hi'iaka House is a charming 1930's plantation style home. It was very cosy and private. (No sharing breakfast table talk with the people next door.) Kathryn Grout, the manager, stocks the kitchen with breakfast makings and wonderful pasteries baked by a local pastry chef. The house was very clean, has a cosy woodstove in the living room (perfect for a December night in Volcano) and lots of privacy since you have the whole house to yourself. Definitely worth checking out. We were delighted with our find.

I stayed at the Kilauea Lodge last week and loved it. Our room had it's own fireplace and queen size bed. It was $125, but worth it. The breakfast was huge and delicious. They also serve dinner. I told them it was my honeymoon, and for dinner they gave us a free split of champagne. Take a look at their website: http://www.kilauealodge.com/

Thanks for the responses, everybody. We opted for the Country Goose. She had a cabin available and has been very pleasant in our email exchanges. We are very much looking forward to it!

My husband and I stayed at Carson's volcano lodge two years in a row. The first year was on our honeymoon. They have cottages a couple blocks from the main house. We stayed in one that had two bedrooms two bathrooms living room, adorable kitchen and an outdoor jacguzzi. It was really nice and was very reasonably priced. The second year we stayed in Nick's cabin which is cute but no comparison. Nicks cabin is small and a little cluttered. There off site cottages are great. Their breakfasts are the best. Also for dinner the Kiluea Lodge is very good.
