Need advice on best route and method please!

From our hotel at La Guardia we will need to get to Midtown (Theater Dist.) on a Fri. night if that means anything. So...what's the best method of transportation there and back? Rent a car and find a parking garage? Taxi? Is there a bus route? And which route if we drove? Thanks for the help

It would help if you identified the hotel. There are several options, but renting a car is probably the last one I'd ever choose. If you wanted to take a bus, there are a few bus routes in that area, but you'd most likely want to transfer to subway to complete your trip.

As money seems to be no object, I would hire a car service to take you. One company that I have used and which gets frequent recs on this board is Tel Aviv Car Service, give them a call at 1-800-222-9888 or take a look at their website at http://www.telavivlimo.com/. If you are going to the theatre, it is also great to have them waiting for you outside the theatre at the end of the night to take you back. If you don?t want a car service, a taxi is fine; however, trying to find a free taxi in the theatre district when all the shows let out (most shows end about the same time) is a real hassle.

Other options are Long Island Rail Road to Penn Station and from Penn Station by subway or taxi up to the theatre district, or take a bus or the LIRR to a subway stop on Long Island and into Manhattan (assuming there is no subway stop near your hotel). Website for the LIRR is http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/lirr/. Website for the subway is http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/subway/. You should be able to find bus information at mta.nyc.ny home page.

Renting a car would be the worst way, IMO, to do this. In addition to the expense of renting the car and parking in mid-town, the traffic and hassle factor are not worth it.

If best option implies money isn't a consideration, then certainly the car service idea is a good one. It'll provide certainty (whereas flagging a taxi on a Friday night in Times Square could be difficult) and you won't need to deal with the hassle of driving unfamiliar roads, fighting the usual Friday night traffic, and findin a parking garage.

If price is a bit of an issue, then perhaps you take a taxi to the nearest subway station. There are times when taking the train can prove to be much faster then a car and sometimes a Friday night, around rush hour, will be one of those times.

The least desireable option is the NYC Bus as New York buses, unless they are express buses, can sometimes take an un-godly amount of time.

Taxi from a hotel in Queens to Midtown is not a great option. Except for the airports cabs in Queens are few and far between. Realistically you will need to arrange a car service into Manhattan - and are probably better off having one to return as well. Also, keep in mind that if you do take a cab back you will need to have exact directions for the driver - once you leave Manhattan many are not familiar with the neighborhoods - or locations of any hotels.

Do not know where you're staying - not familiar with any hotels at LGA - but I don;t think public transport is an option unless you have a lot of time to play with.

Do not rent a car - this would be an exercise in frustration - and very expensive.
