I will be working in Freeport for a week and my husband will be joining me at the end. We will have two nights and want to move on to a seaside village of sorts. Flying out of Portland, so don't want to be more than two hours from the airport.

We enjoy quaint seaside towns. With perhaps some shops, but lots of dining, and places to sit out on the water and have a drink. We have only been to Maine once, and ended up in Kennebunkport which we liked. Would like to be able to stay in town, and hopefully find a hotel that we can walk to everything. We enjoy going to marina's to watch boats - working boats, and pleasure boats also.

So - any advice on a nice village that would have a nice hotel, restaurants, and a bit of shopping - and can sit and watch the water? No greater than two hours of Portland's airport?

Camden, Maine! Please read about it and you will see why I suggest it. so many beautiful B&B's beautiful harbor, hiking, shops and much more!

Yes, go to Camden. Lovely, lovely harbor. There are many great little hotels & B&B's. I grew up near there & got married in the outdoor amphitheater behind the library - it's just beautiful. One of my very favorite places.

You might also like Boothbay Harbor, but I've not been there in years. Camden is hard to beat. Great shopping, fun restaurants, art galleries, a really neat vibe. And the harbor is right there too.

I forgot to add that you can either hike or drive up Mt Battie. At the top there is a lovely view of the entire town of Camden, the harbor and beyond. Mt Battie is in Camden Hills State Park. Can you tell I love it there??

Thank you so much. Are there hotels in town on the water - or do you have to stay elsewhere and walk or drive into town? I'll begin some research today on Camden. Thanks!

We loved our stay for a week at the gorgeous White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport..stunning, romantic inn.
Dining is incredible with a great wine list.
Great seaside town with lots of charm.
We love Maine!

Camden would be great but check time from Portland.

We just spent the weekend at the Dunes in Ogunquit. It's more of a small old fashioned cottage colony on the water and trolley route. Wonderfully maintained 12 acres with your own adirondack chairs. It's actually on a saltwater river with a set of dunes between river and beach. You can either walk across at low tide or take a row boat. Plenty of restaurants around but Camden's harbor really can't be beat.

We loved our trip to Camden. We stayed at the Lord Camden Inn-it is in great location for walking around town and going to local restaurants. The breakfast included with the inn was great.

We just returned from a wonderful trip to Maine and stayed three nights in Camden. We took a sailboat cruise. We took the Schooner Olad, but I think any of the three would be wonderful. If you have the time and love the water, I suggest taking one of these. It was my favorite part of our stay in Camden.
