Need accomodations in Haines
Traveling early July 2009. We will be staying in Haines overnight to catch the ferry to Juneau and return. I need some help in finding a good place to stay for two. I would welcome recommendations for good B&B, Hotel or Motel. Price range $100 to $170 for double.
Many thanks,
Z

I can't give you a recommendation where to stay but I can recommend against a hotel. I stayed at Halsingland Hotel last summer and was disappointed. The room I had was small and cramped and the bathroom and shower tiny.
If you find a good place, please repost. I'll be visiting again in late July and early August and am looking for a better accomodation.

We stayed one night in Lynn View Lodge in one of two tiny cabins. The dark brown towels were fine, new microwave, small refrigerator and even flat small TV. On the other hand the bed was the biggest surprise. There were only sleeping bags, one laying on a freshly (!)stained sheet. It looks like someone just jumped out of the bed. Maybe someone did. It was ugly. We should stay in our own car but it was almost midnight. Our ferry arrived late from Juneau and it was too late to look for another place but no way I would stay there ever again. Thankfully we had our own sheets and blankets in the car which I later double washed. The innkeeper was very nice to exchange e-mails with. She also has rooms at her house and maybe they are acceptable. I didn't see them and truly I don't want to check them out. The website states the cabins are 200 square feet and will comfortably fit a family of 4. Really? No way 4 people can be comfortable. There was not much comfort for 2 of us.

Then we stayed for three nights at the River House which has gorgeous views from an upstairs apartment and if you’re able to overlook a few things then you may want to check out the website. If you are looking for a spotless place then continue you search. Gosh! This place would be so great but it needs good cleaning. The bedroom is upstairs in a loft and there is a spiral narrow stairway leading to it which may not be suitable for everyone. The bed has flowery bed sheets and I'm not crazy about those. I don’t think I would return to the River House unless someone can assure me this place was scrubbed; refrigerator, stove, oven cleaned; windows washed, etc,. The water is not drinkable. For washing dishes and drinking you use water from a 5 gallon container.

It looks like the River House is still better option than Halsingland Hotel or Lynn View Lodge.

OK that is helpful, two places I will not stay at, but I still could use suggestions for places to stay at. I found in the past Web sites from accommodation providers with nice pictures are helpful but not always a reliable reflection of the quality of the place.

You might look into some of the accommodations available on the Haines website:

We stayed at the Captain's Choice Motel, but that was back in 2000. It was acceptable at the time, certainly nothing more. Don't recall the rates.

I checked the Haines list of accommodations and have narrowed the list down to two:
The Attic 2 BR with Kitchen $125 / night
Beach Roadhouse, Chalet Cabins $155, Queen bed & Kitchen.
Not much to go by other than pictures and kitchen.
Anyone stayed at these places.

I have settled on a list of three below:
1. Tanani Bay B&B has full kitchen $125
2. The Attic 2 BR with Kitchen $125 / night
3. Beach Roadhouse, Chalet Cabins $155, Queen bed & Kitchen.
Any comments or recommendations on the above three.
Thanks,
Z

Hi Z,
I wish I had more information on these places you listed. I met a young lady while doing laundry in town and I think she stayed at Tanani Bay B&B. I'm not 100% positive but maybe 95%. We exchanged our observations about places we stayed in and she was very happy about her lodging. She mentioned something about a self-served breakfast. The Attic I think is near the visitor center so I had to walk by this place from the visitor center to the library and then to the market. It would be a great location. Haines is a small village.

We stayed at Tatani Bay BB both on the way to Juneau and return. Lower level apartment, bedroom with Queen size bed, full kitchen and sitting room. Very clean and comfortable, great breakfast. Close to Ferry terminal. I would highly recommend the place.
