I just saw/posted to your thread on the Europe board. I think you'll have a better chance stretching your budget stateside.

Southern California?
Northern California?

Either would be easily doable from Newark or Philly.

Pacific Northwest?? Portland, OR, Seattle, Vancouver....... maybe OR/WA coast or Mt. Hood, Mt. Ranier, etc. depending on your interests.

My first thought was what emalloy suggested. We flew into Vancouver, spent a few days there, took the train to Seattle, rented a car and drove to Olympic National Park for several days and then back to Seattle before flying home.

Since you like cities, there is a lot to do and see in and around Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas.

Colorado. Denver will be the city fix, outside Denver is all the activity you can want.

HTTY - Las Vegas won't work. They have a sub-18 kid.

Hawaii.

I'd visit San Francisco for 3-4 days then maybe head to Gold Country. Probably too late to get reservations for Yosemite unless you want to call every day to try for a cancellation.

Las Vegas won't work. They have a sub-18 kid

It wouldn't be my first choice for children, but the many times I've been in Las Vegas I've seen throngs of under-18 people on the streets, and when I Googled "child friendly las vegas" I got 5,580,000 results.

No to Vegas.

Washington, DC?

What kind of activities do you like? Only those things available in cities and urban places? Or, would you be happy with outdoor activities with your 12 year old?

How about Albuquerque and Santa Fe? City stuff (museums, art), Native American pueblos, hiking, etc.

Las Vegas, Times Square, and Venice are three of my favorite places. They are all mindboggling, eye-popping, and unforgettable.

HTTY, are you referring to Venice, California? I like Venice, but I just wouldn't refer to it by any of the three adjectives you used (now Venice, Italy, that's another story!)

How about Hawaii or Bahamas
