Neat little town around Denver
 

We are going to be visiting Denver for a couple of days the end of January.
We would like to visit some little towns nearby for short day trips. I looked up some towns and Georgetown looks like as well as Everygreen. Anything we should not miss? Sorry we are not skiers.

Evergreen is more a new enclave of giant houses; Georgetown is the real deal, an old mining town with lots of historic buildings, streets, etc. Golden has a main street with lots going on, and the Coors Brewery tour is fun (given weather and roads, you can drive up to see Buffalo Bill's grave and museum). There's also Morrison nearby, which has some fun main-street shops, Red Rocks Natural Amphitheater, and the Dinosaur Ridge dino footprints and "geological interest" site.
Boulder and Estes Park are also day trips.

A second recommendation of Georgetown. We lucked in a few years ago and spend a real delightful, old-fashioned Fourth of July there.

I don't think Evergreen is that attractive. Idaho Springs has an interesting history, a gold mine, and a very good micro brewery. Golden is a good choice with a great railroad museum if that is interesting to you. The risk for January is cold and snow so be prepared. Some like Boulder and the Boulder mall. It is a college town and could be visit depending on what is happening there. If weather is good you could do a loop through Georgetown, Eisenhower tunnel, Frisco, Breckenridge, Hoosier Pass, back to Denver via 285 which would take you through Morrison. Have dinner at the Fort in Morrison overlooking the city of Denver at night.

I think whatever town you pick that was suggested you will enjoy. As for Evergreen, there is a beautiful lake with ice skating and if you don't want to ice skate you can walk around the lake into downtown Evergreen. There are some shops and some good restaurants. Across the street from the lake with really nice views is Willow Creek. In town, Creekside is a good restaurant on a river. And, if you feel like some spa treatments, about 15 minutes from the lake is Tall Grass Spa...an amazing relaxing getaway!

I love the loop through Georgetown, tunnel; however, if the roads are bad and you aren't used to driving on snow I wouldn't recommend it. The mountain roads can get really bad.

Warning....do not do the loop (Georgetown, Eisenhower tunnel,...) mentioned above on a weekend. The skier traffic is horrible and could take you hours.
