I drive from southern VA up to Lancaster every Thanksgiving. The first year I drove up on 81 the Wed. before Thanksgiving and made the mistake of hitting the Harrisburg area around 5:30 pm and it was an absolute nightmare - total gridlock. Since then I've chosen to drive up a few days earlier. Also, the section of 81 around Carlisle, PA is known for a high level of accidents. Last year I drove up the Fri. before Thanksgiving and traffic was stopped for five hours due to a fatal accident and I have since chosen to get off 81 and find alternative routes when approaching that section of 81. Also, avoid driving back Sun. and try for Sat. or Mon.
