Navajo rugs

I am going to Arizona in December and am thinking about buying a Navajo rug.
I will be based in Tucson, but will be travelling to Flagstaff, Sedona and the Grand Canyon.

Can anyone recommend or suggest a particular place in these areas.

I purchased 2 rugs ages ago (1982) at the Grand Canyon.

Not sure how much I want to spend, that will depend if I "fall in love" with it. Maybe $2000 tops, but more probably in the $500 to $1000 range.

Any advice appreciated!
Thanks a bunch!

You may want to contact the Heard Museum in Phoenix. They may be able to recommend a place to get an authentic Navajo rug.

Gilbert,
As a collector of Navajo rugs, I recommend going to the library or internet and doing research on the style you prefer; i.e., Two Grey Hills. Books by Steve Getzwiller or Don Dedera are very good sources. There are so many places in Arizona that sell rugs and I cannot recommend any particular one. It is best to be informed so you know if you are getting the real thing for a fair price. Some places you may want to try: R.B. Burnham's in Sanders; Crownpoint, N.M.(rug auctions on a regular basis); and Hubbell's in Ganado, AZ. Good hunting! This is a subject that makes my poor husband hyperventilate!

Other than trading posts on the reservation, I would strongly recommend The Heard Museum in Phoenix/Scottsdale or Garland's in Sedona.

If you don't mind a little driving, check out the Cameron Trading Post, and ask to see their private shop. Some beautiful things there! (I saw it on a tip from a fellow fodorite)

Here's a "second" for Garland's in Sedona. At the bridge just before you come to the stoplight. Been in business for years and years. Marvelous collection, very helpful and knowledgeable staff.
