Native view of Rush Street
 

Hey Chicagoans, trying to find out what the natives think of Rush Street.. Is it it touristy, seedy, trendy, hip? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

For the record, Lucio, Rush Street is only hip to tourists and college kids. Mother's is just about the corniest bar in the city of Chicago.

I'd have to agree with Karen--Rush Street is definitely just for tourists. In fact, as a Chicagoan, I rarely spend anytime downtown (except to go to the museums). Instead, I hang out in the neighborhoods in the city. For example, I'd rather frequent the 1929 movie theater, the Music Box, which features mostly classic or foreign films, than spend my movie dollars at the theaters in the malls downtown. For shopping, I'd also rather visit neighbor shops than spend time at Rush Street.

I'm a native, but probably of the wrong age group. The only people I know who go to the Rush Street area are under 25 and usually still in college. The young singles and marrieds in all socio-economic groups seem to be hanging out in local areas, some very upscale- like Oakbrook, or Harrison's in Orland Park. <BR>I have friends who have lost their offspring to Wrigleyville and surrounds- or various other areas Near North / Lincoln Park and beyond. They hardly go to visit as there is no place to park. In Chicago's South, Southwest, <BR>West, Northwest Suburbs there are so many more popular entertainment and <BR>dining establishments that tourists never have easy access to that I can honestly say that only a small proportion of locals ever go downtown except for Venetian night or a special <BR>event, or sporting event. I'm downtown much more than anyone I know and most of the time it is for a tail gate Bears game or for the Sox.

First of all, most of the "action" is on Division St., not Rush any longer. <BR>Second, I would characterize it as touristy, cheesy, LAME. <BR>Even most tourists think it's bad. If you're in college with a fake ID, you'd probably be in heaven. <BR>Agree with previous poster, tourists who truly want to experience the Chicago bar scene need to spend time in the neighborhoods.

let's not foget about the great steak joints...that's what i think about when it comes to Rush street

If you're talking about Gibsons it's terribly overrated. Way too noisy and service is spotty. Give me good old reliable (and calmer) Eli's anyday.
