Native American Ruins

Does anyone know the site of ruins that are built into the side of a mountain and are located between Scottsdale and Sedona? A friend has gone there but can't remember the name. It's supposed to be a fascinating thing to see. We'll be in the area next month and want to put this on our itinerary.

Would you be talking about Mesa Verde?

Mesa Verde National Park is in Colorado, nowhere near Scottsdale or Sedona.

You must be thinking of Montezuma's Castle National Monument.

Yes, Montezuma's Castle.
We also like Montezuma's Well which is near the turn-off to Sedona. It's only impressive if you walk down nto it and out the path on the side.

Thanks so much for everyone's help!

There also are ruins very near Sedona, Palatki and Honanki, I think. You can get to them on one of the Pink Jeep tours or get a parking permit in town. Check for directions at the visitor's center.

If you head on up to Flagstaff from Sedona, you can also see Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater and the Wupatki ruins. All can be done in a single day, and are worth seeing. Kids (of all ages) always like the blow hole out at the Wupatki ruins.

Wupatki is also nice because you can walk into the ruins. There are several locations you can visit. The blowhole is at the main (Wupatki) site.

You can also get closer at Walnut Canyon altho it is not as impressive

These are farther than Sedona.

Montezuma's Castle is the most impressive, but you just have to be content with viewing from the canyon floor. As mentioned, Montezuma's Well is nearby and also worth a visit
