Nashville, Memphis or Charleston?
I'm visiting the U.S. in October and would like to head to one place in the south. I can't, however, decide on Nashville, Memphis or Charleston. I realise Charleston is smaller of the three but I am interested in anything with history and culture. Does anyone have any thoughts and opinions on these places?

My vote is for Charleston.
You can get a much better feel for its history in a small, walkable area of the city, whereas in Nashville and Memphis things are much more dispersed. Charleston is a city which focuses on its history, while the others are more multifaceted, diluting their historical aspects (relative to Charleston).

Charleston. Definitely.
|
Charleston, without a doubt.
|
Another vote for Charleston- the scale of the city is just right for exploring by foot.
|
Charleston. Have you considered Savannah? It is another great city filled with history and culture.
|
Charleston for sure. You have pre-Revolutionary history through Civil War History in a very concentrated place. And the architecture can't be topped. It is a beautiful place.
|
Another vote for Charleston.

Charleston if you want earlier US history. But Memphis if you want a sense of twentieth-century history -- everything from Elvis to jazz to the national civil rights museum.

Charleston or Savannah, Georgia

Rachel:
Charleston and Savannah are both lovely, you will not be disappointed. Nashville is wonderful for all kinds of music; but is a fairly large city. If you choose Nashville take a side trip to Franklin (few miles south of Nash.). It is a beautiful small town that centers on its Civil War history. Enjoy your trip!
I've been to all 3, and without a doubt I would vote for Charleston. Beautiful city with much to offer a variety of tastes. Recently spent 8 days theere & 3 in Savannah. Charleston is FANTASTIC!

All three cities are very diffrent. Memphis is a party town with lot's of bars and Elvis.

Nashville, is bigger and has pro sports and the Arts

Charleston is the history place.

I'd agree that Charleston would be your best bet -- and I can say that as someone who lives in Nashville. Charleston is prettier as well as more architecturally and historically interesting. I wouldn't recommend Nashville unless you are REALLY interested in country music.

Thanks for everyone who responded. Without a doubt it's going to be Charleston. I am from Australia and can't wait to see your beautiful country!
