Can anyone give me info on best places to stay and eat in Nashville?

Not without knowing your budget and your preferences.

Ditto BigRuss. If "best" means "most expensive fine dining," try the Catbird Seat, but otherwise that's way out of most people's budgets (and hard to get reservations for). What kind of prices and food are you looking for?

If you're coming for a typical tourist visit, stay downtown, south of the Capitol, north of Korean Vets, and east of 8th Avenue/Rosa Parks. Lots of hotels there at various price levels.

I thought Catbird Seat was very overrated and I am all about that style of dining.

Our meal at Capitol Grille was by far the best we had in Nashville.

I agree with Janet! We had a great time at The Hermitage and the meal at Capitol Grille was fabulous.

We were thinking an average price in the city of 300 for a hotel.
Also as for dinner average as well. Have been to Capital Grille in New York, it's good.

Etch for upscale "foodie" dining.

The Farm House for upscale foodie "Southern" dining.

Monell's for amazing, totally authentic Southern cooking. Funky fun -- not expensive or fancy. My favorite Monell's is the one near the airport (I think on Murfreesboro Rd.) but the one in Germantown (near the Bicentennial Mall and Farmer's Market) is the same food and a different, but in some ways, equally interesting atmosphere.

If the Hermitage Hotel is out of your price range check out the Union Station Hotel.

Egad!!! Capitol Grille is a chain steakhouse. You don't pick a national chain for your only big meal in a destination that has great food. Have some local barbecue or good southern food and skip the chain. There are dozens of great places to eat, Songdoc having given you three very good recommendations.

"Average" depends a lot on where you're coming from - an average entree in New York is priced higher than one in my hometown. But here are some of my favorites.

Farm-to-table, nicer places: Husk (major focus on Southern ingredients), City House, Lockeland Table, Rolf & Daughters (I haven't been to Etch yet but have heard good things, and it has the benefit of being right downtown, as is The Southern)

Casual: Fido, Burger Up, Martin's Barbecue, Mas Tacos Por Favor, Marche for brunch

Doug, are you sure THAT Capitol Grille is part of the chain? There's none listed in Nashville on the chain's website, and it seems to be unrelated. I don't have the answer, but I also noted that the chain is Capital Grille, but the one in Nashville is named Capitol Grille. The Capitol Grille in Nashville appears to be almost legendary

Capitol Grille in Nashville is not a chain. It is legendary. There is also HUSK. It was very good. The Sheraton in downtown Nashville is also newly renovated and very nice.

Patrick, I think you're right. Capitol Grille has been around a long time here (launching Sean Brock's career - he worked there before moving to Charleston to start Husk and McCrady's), and though I've never been, I've never thought it was a chain.

Doug, you were 100% right about avoiding chains while the OP is here, though! :) Too many local places are too good for that.

A couple I forgot - Biscuit Love in the Gulch is getting great reviews; I don't eat much bread so I haven't made it a priority, but the owners have had a food truck in town for a long time and the brick-and-mortar version has been very popular. Also, Arnold's on 8th is the classic meat & three.

But really, just scroll through Eater for the neighborhoods you'll be in and your budget - you'll find something that sounds good.
