Narrangansett or South Kingstown?

We are planning a last minute 3 day trip to Rhode Island next week. We are interested in walking in beautiful places, beaches (swimming if the the weather cooperates) bird watching and kayaking. I have found availability in both Narragansett and South Kingstown. Any suggestions as to which would make a better base for our explorations? Can someone tell me a little about South Kingstown.

Thanks

All of Narragansett is near the water. South Kingstown is one town back from the water, except right along the south coast, where there is a state park.

Both are pleasant places.

Narragansett is marginally closer to Jamestown and Newport, albeit across the bridges.

What do the property listings say about their locations?

The B and B in Narragansett is a short walk to the beach. THe South Kingstown property is a chain hotel (Hampton). I was wondering whether Kingstown is more city like and therefore not as nice a vacation spot.I know nothing about it.

"South Kingstown" actually covers a few areas/towns/villages, some of which are more inland and rural or town-like. But the Hampton Inn is at an intersection of 2 relatively major (for the area) roads. There's another hotel (Holiday Inn) gas station etc. Think strip mall, not town.

Narragansett is a resort town with some quiet streets and some big condo complexes. There are stores and restaurants in the immediate area. A nearby pleasant smaller town (not beachfront)is Wickford (which also sometimes is listed as North Kingstown-)

I like the beaches along the southern shore (Matunuck, Charlestown) better than those in Narragansett, but it's up to you which type of lodging and location you prefer.

Wherever you go eat at Matunuck Oyster Bar.
