Naples Nightlife? Oxymoron?
I'm hosting a girls' holiday in Naples in April and the subject came up last night about nightlife -- one of our friends is divorced and loves to go dancing. This will be their first visit to Naples.
I've been coming to Naples with my husband and daughters for almost 15 years so this has never been an issue for us. But since this is a girls' get together I'm trying to accommodate everyone's wishes. I suspect that anyplace that offers dancing is going to be more of a couples place. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your best bet is probably along Fifth Avenue South -- 10 and after -- mainly on Friday or Saturday.
Mangrove Cafe (Diva Bar) becomes pretty lively after 10 with DJ.
Vergina varies from jazz to more danceable music late night.
Yabba can get to be a pretty major scene, but I think it might be a little younger than you're looking for?
Bar Lurcat is very popular late nights, but I'm not sure how much dancing there is.
Same story with Trulucks.
I'm also not sure what's happening at either the Ritz on the Beach or at the Naples Grande (formerly The Registry) which have both usually had "dance" type nightclubs going in season.
I suggest when you get here, you go to one of the Fifth Avenue bars (Pazzo or Chops, for example) and chat with one of the bartenders who will give you the weekly lowdown. For some reason even the newspaper's weekly Showcase section no longer lists the "club" scene.
But honestly, I wouldn't worry about any dance place being a "couples" scene. Lots of singles even come here now from the East coast on weekends. To be honest, many of the places become rather "high class" pick up places. Your recently divorced friend might get very lucky. LOL

Can you suggest a nice place for brunch or lunch maybe with a view of the gulf? I've been to HB's on the Gulf, but was thinking of some other options with say a more tropical or resort atmosphere. Do you think LaPlaya would fit the bill?

There really isn't anything at all in Naples proper on the Gulf (unless you can get invited to a private home) other than HB's. LaPlaya is a pretty place and right on the beach so that's a good option -- I'm not sure what they do for brunch. The Turtle Club, between the Ritz and LaPlaya is another option -- also right on the beach.
The other end of the spectrum is Buzz's Lighthouse, on the bay side at Vanderbilt, near the Turtle Club. It's a rustic deck over the bay where you are best going super casual and eating grouper ruebens washed down with beer. Not sure if that's the atmosphere you're seeking, though.

I was thinking more upscale and with a real tropical feeling. The Turtle Club menu looks good although there are no prices. Do you know approximate costs for lunch there or at LaPlaya?
