Naples, FL to NYC
 

Driving up from Naples to NYC in of all months, December. Not planning to do too much sight-seeing on the way up; just trying to get home. How many overnights should we plan to have? Any particular spots make sense? Alternatives to 95? We're young and fairly fast drivers and will be able to split the time. Sorry if there are posts on this subject, I'll keep searching. Thanks for any input or text string references!

Hi, May. As a long time "Neapolitan", I've done that trip quite a few times. While I don't particularly enjoy it, I'd say that straight across Alligator Alley to I-95 and then all the way up is the quickest, despite some really bad traffic around Washington, D.C. and of course, major traffic near the City.

I've done some alternates off into Virginia and Pennsylvania, but December could be tricky in the mountains -- with fog more likely than freezing rain or snow.

You really can do the trip in two days, making the one stop overnight somewhere into North Carolina --lots of chain motels along the way. I often stop in Savannah or Charleston in the mid afternoon for a little break, then spend another night somewhere between Washington and the Delaware area so I arrive early the third day in New York. But we have had huge troubles finding a hotel room along that Delaware corridor -- finding everything fully booked by dark.

Overnights? With 2 "fairly fast drivers"? Why would you need to stay overnight(S??)then??
I've driven 16 hr road trips alone with no problem so 20 hrs with someone else should be a breeze!

go to freetrip.com, enter your starting and ending points, check off the price range you want for a hotel and figure it out from there. Even if you don't make reservations, it will give an idea of places to stay in the areas you would consider stopping.

We come up from Sarasota area to the washington DC area and take I-75 up to Ocala (Rt 326) and over to Rt 301 and then up to I-95. We also stop around the Carolinas (usually North) and then onto suburban Md. When we get around Richmond we take exit 104 just north of Richmond and head over to Rt 301 and then follow that up around DC. It will then take you up to the Baltimore beltway where you can connect with I-95 again. we generally make good time using I-75 and 301 but we watch for the police in Waldo. It's a good idea to use a radar detector on the trip north. Have a good safe drive and you should make it in two nights.

I second taking two nights for the trip. December is too unpredictable wather-wise, so you're best to allow for two. Bravo to you if you can do it in one! We used to drive from Altanta to NH for Christmas. 23 hours. Sometimes we broke it up; other times we didn't. My parents live in Naples and last week they drove up to Worcester, MA, in two days.

See how well rested you are before the trip, and see if there are any snowstorms in the forecast, and judge accordingly.

I do this trip a lot. two days total one night stay It all depends what time you leave I did this trip last year durring the Christmas blizzard in New York I was heading to Naples from New York. If you leave Naples at 5:30 am take 75 north to rt 4 east cut across to rt 95north at that time you should just miss each citys morning rush and get past Orlando before the crowds head to the theam parks .You should be in Orlando about 8:30 am The trip is about 1450 miles total. If you drive 12-13 hours a day you should arrive In Rockey Mt North Carolina there are lots of places to stay in North Carolina . The half way point is The famous South of the border it is 750 mile from Naples and NYC.Also Florence South Carolina has some good hotel deals. It should be just getting dark. you will have time to get a place to stay they fill up fast andtime for a Nice Dinner . The Hampton Inn and comfort Inns have good free continental Breakfast. If you get on the road the next day by 7:30 when you hit Washington DC at around 1:00pm You should have missed all the traffic in the loop and it is 4 hours from DC to NYC you should Arrive in NYC about 5:00 pm and the traffic will be heading south so you will breaze into the city at that time. I have done the other routes this is the fastest 75 to rt 10 is longer and the rt 75 to 85 in Atlanta to rt 80 is longer but it has no tolls.

Also while you are in Naples Go to the AAA south store in the Bed Bath and Beyond plaza on the corner of Airpot Pulling rd. and Pine ridge rd they have free trip planners and maps they can map out the route for you and provide discount books for hotels.

May== USE LN's Advice--esp.on the Virginia routing around DC...the area N.of Richmond ( around Springfield VA ) is the MIXER BOWL and is UNDER HEAVY RENOVATION with tons of lane closures...A virtual nightmare==

take the 301 detour and get up to Md that way.....MUCH better- a lot more traffic lights but at least the traffic will be moving VERSUS standing still on I 95 N....
