Naples, FL - Port of the Islands Resort & Marina

Hello.

We were considering staying at the Port of the Islands Resort & Marina on the Tamiami Trail.

We haven't seen any recent reviews on the net. TripAdvisor's most recent reviews were from 2004 and were good, but we were looking for some current feedback.

We plan to explore the parks in and around the everglades for a few days.

Thanks!

If your interest is in the Ev erglades and possibly Marco Island, this is reasonably well located for doing that. Despite it's Naples address,it is a long way from Naples down 41, probably 40 minutes or so. It is a condo/marina/hotel development now undergoing redevelopment after a number of years of just sitting there. Facilities will be newish, but there is no "there" there, if you understand what I am saying. Everglades City is a more interesting place, perhaps, but I don't know its status since Hurricane Wilma. Hope this helps at least some.

Thanks for the info.

We wanted a central base for visiting the various parks. We intend to check out Everglades City and parks/refuges before going to Cape Coral where we will visit family. CC...talk about no there there.

We will always seek out old Florida when we visit, hoping someday to bump into Carl Hiassen or at least meet someone who has been the inspiration for one of his characters.

Have you visited the Koreshan sight (on 41 in Estero)?
Definitely old Florida!

Here's a recent article from the Naples Daily News about 5 hikes in the region. I thought it was a stupidly written piece as they never give you information on some of them like "is it ten minutes or 12 hours long?" But here it is anyway:

I love your comment about Cape Coral "no there there".

I'd personally thing about staying in Everglades City if you want a little more activity -- Port of the Islands is truly remote. But I haven't been down there since Wilma.

Thanks again for the comments.

We read about the Koreshans. Hard to keep your movement going if everyone's celibate.

Neopolitan, the article on the 5 spring hikes was perfect! Thanks.

Will report on our trip.

Ciao.
