Naples & the Everglades

Visiting Naples in a couple of weeks & wondered whether anyone has any suggestions of the best places to visit in the Everglades from the gulf coast?
Thank you for any help

Diane...We've been to the park a few times. For us, the best place to visit in the Everglades is the Anhenga Trail which is closest to the Homestead entrance. If you arrive there late in the afternoon and stay through sunset, you will have a very special experience. Be sure to take your camera. If you Google Anhenga Trail you will find some websites with more details.

I, too, love the Anhinga Trail but it is quite a long ways from Naples. I suggest you head to Everglades City and experience the Everglades from there. Another choice is to go to Shark VAlley and take the tram or rent bikes. Go to the national park website and see what fits your interests. You should also include a trip to Clyde Butcher's photography gallery on US 41 (the Tamiami Trail).

I would recommend a visit to Corkscrew Swamp sanctuary, home of the largest remaining old-growth bald cypress forest in North America. A 2.25-mile raised boardwalk takes you through the sanctuary. It’s a perfect opportunity to discover the native plants and wildlife of southwest Florida. Alligators, wood storks, egrets, rabbits, deer…I could go on and on. At the start of the walk, there’s a board listing the different kinds of wildlife spotted that day by visitors. Allow 2 to 3 hours for your adventure. We spent over 3 hours last weekend. The walk along the boardwalk was so fascinating.

I second the idea of Corkscrew Sanctuary. We had a very pleasant afternoon there several years ago. I would love to go back. Best of all, it's not that far from Naples.

Thanks for the corkscrew suggestion, we visited there last year & intend to return, as we really enjoyed it! looked at Anhinga Trail & decided it too far to go, so will probably try everglades city

By the way, be sure to check out the Naples Conservancy for other "nature" activities including boat trips and walks right in Naples.
