Napa Valley - In or Out of town

We are heading to the Napa Valley for a few nights. I'm seeing a variety of places in and out of Napa/Sonoma. Some are right downtown Napa and some out in the hills. I'm wondering what the pros and cons of each are.

We tend to be people who like to head out at night to a restaurant and some various establishments and of course we are out there to visit some wineries.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

First, have you actually decided on Napa Valley? Sonoma is the adjacent valley, and it's not a drive I like to do at night.

Second, town vs. more remote. I personally like to be staying in town, so i can go out to dinner and not have to drive, and get up and walk to coffee/breakfast. You should look at downtown Napa, Yountville, Calistoga (all in the Napa Valley), and downtown Sonoma (as opposed to the Sonoma Valley) and downtown Healdsburg (Sonoma Valley), all of which will satisfy your desire for restaurants, and to varying degrees, bars, music, etc. If you do stay in the City of Napa, check out the Blue Note for music. Also, I just recently had dinner at Oenotri and it was very good and a very pleasant ambiance.

St Helena is another interesting town in the Napa Valley where you can walk to restaurants & breakfast places.
