Napa or Sonoma?
 

My husband and I will be visiting San Francisco for 5 days this spring and want to spend 2 days in wine country. Recommendations for either place (including hotels/bb's) would be appreciated. Thanks!

Honestly you could easily do both in 2 days - but you would just get an overview of each with only 1 day in Napa or Sonoma.

We might need some more information from you:

Favorite wines or any wineries you want to visit
Budget
Hotel Likes/Dislikes
Favorite foods & types of dining you are looking for.

Napa and Sonoma are right next to each other and you can drive from one to the other in minutes. However each area is very diverse and spreads out very far.

I prefer Sonoma to Napa because it is a bit more laid back and feels more like California to me - Napa is more pumped up - feels more contrived...

Sonoma County, more specifically Healdsburg. Check out Calderwood Inn and the Inn on the Plaza. Lots more recommended here.

Visit the Dry Creek, Alexander Valley and Russian River Wineries.

Thanks for your responses- we are looking for something more romantic and quaint (would take a resort if you could recommend a good one though) we both love wine and are open to visiting any of the wineries in the area. Dining we would like something really special for one of the nights...

I would really look into staying right at the Sonoma Square there are a couple of nice small hotels on the square that have Spa's etc...attached to them. The dining, shoping, cheese and wine tasting around the square is hard to beat - plus you will be only a few minutes from the Glen Ellen, Kenwood, and Carneros wine regions for easy trips or just an hour or so away from most Sonoma or Napa wineries...

We were there in October of this year, and stayed just outside of Sonoma. We absolutely fell in love with Sonoma. It has a great feel to it, and we loved wandering around the square shopping, and exploring the many excellent restaurants at night - Cafe La Haye, Girl and the Fig, and La Salette come to mind.

Look at MacArthur Place, which is just outside of the square. Looked really nice, and I think it's within walking distance of the plaza.

Easy, easy, drive to all the Sonoma wineries.

We loved Healdsburg as well, but it felt a little remote to us.

I loved the Sonoma Mission Inn. We will be staying there again in March. We also liked the BW property right on the plaza. I have heard good things about the El Dorado,also on the square.

In Napa we like the Yountville Inn. We have also enjoyed stays at the Harvest Inn in St. Helena.

I love the girl and the fig, Cafe La Haye, also. In Healdsburg, we enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Healdsburg, right on the Plaza. Our room included a tasting dinner at Charlie Palmer's Dry Creek Kitchen that was excellent. www.hotelhealdsburg.com

If you go to Healdsburg, check out the Chateau Souverain winery. We loved our lunch at the bistro there. ***kim*** ((l))
