Nantucket for Xmas?
I'm hoping to find out if there are any excellent hotels or B&Bs open on Nantucket for Xmas day and Xmas night? Also, what about restaurants for Xmas dinner?
Thanks! |
We stayed at the Martin House Inn and enjoyed it. Our room had its own fireplace (no firewood though!), private bath, and a nice balcony. They served fresh baked goods in the afternoon, which made it a hit with my husband.

We go to Nantucket frequently and are friends with the owners of one of the B&Bs. I understand from them that it is very difficult to find a restaurant open on Christmas that will serve Christmas dinner. Last year, I recall our friend telling us that the only place that was going to be open was Stubby's on "the strip". Maybe Ackislander can help out here?

Here I am!
We had a scandalous situation last year in which a complete lack of coordination meant that not one restaurant (Stubby's is a takeout joint) was open on Christmas Day and, I think, the day after. The Jared Coffin house got a supermarket to open its deli and fed its guests on cold cuts, and it is a big $ hotel. I absolutely would not come without confirmed restaurant reservations for Christmas Day and the day after. The weather is going to be mid-30's and probably rainy. We have no snow (it all melted)and it is pretty bleak. Most of the shops are closing Christmas eve and many will not reopen until April. If you are a birder, there is a huge bird count on the 26th, otherwise I would give it a miss, one of the rare times I say that about Nantucket. |
If you want to experience the Christmas season on Nantucket, the weekend right after Thanksgiving is the event known as "Christmas Stroll". It's a big weekend on the island - all the shops, restaurants, inns are open. There are lots of activities throughout the weekend and the island is beautifully decorated and very festive. You will need reservations for lodging and dining at the nicer restaurants. We've been going for many years now. Some people prefer the weekend after as there is still enough open with fewer crowds (restaurants like 21 Federal and The Pearl do close after Stroll, though). It may be something to consider for next year.
