Nantucket for Christmas?

We're thinking of going to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod for the holidays. I thinkk that we wil NEVER go during "the season" -- too crowded, too expensive, etc. -- but i wonder if it is even worth going during the winter. Will I still get a sense of what it's like there?

I have visited as late as early November, after tourists leave and the leaves have fallen. It gets very quiet, but in some ways, I really enjoyed it. Gives you a little appreciation why locals live there and how irritated they must be during high season. The islands are so peaceful off season.
But it's cold and windy. And many of the seasonal businesses are down, of course. Fewer dining options and such. Maybe things perk up around the holidays (?)
The beauty of the area is still quite evident. I hope you have an enjoyable stay. Let us know what you think.

Carol,
Thanks for your reply. You said exactly what I wanted to hear. With airfare so inexpensive now, I'm going to make my reservations today!
Sandy

There is a month long event held called ,Nantucket Noel' if you contact the local chamber of commerce (Do a web search) they will be able to advise you of the events being held.

hi sandy,
please let us know all details of your trip--where you stayed, would you recommend such a trip, etc. It sounds lovely to me, and would love to go on a trip like that. Have fun!
a.s.

Just a warning Sandra, Christmas is not the "off-season" in Nantucket. The Christmas Stroll is VERY popular and there is a good chance that all inns are already booked. At any rate, there won't be any bargains. Start checking ASAP if you want to stay in ACK over the holidays. good luck!

I'm just back from Cape Cod, and one thing that really struck us was how early it gets dark - by 4:30 or so at Chatham. Being from much further south (where sunset is still around 5:30) this was very noticable, and made for what seemed to be very short days. Lots of the shops and restaurants were closing as soon as the sun set.

Just a comment, as this was something I'd think about before I went there again in fall/winter.

Just got back from Nantucket yesterday. My wife and I were there from Mon. through Sat. morning. Stayed in a timeshare operation called Tristram's Landing, at Madaket on the west corner of the island.

We loved it. Weather was rotten, but the ambiance was delightful, and it was not crowded. Lovely decorations and a pleasant holiday atmosphere.

We did take our vehicle (really had to, considering lodging location.) It costs about $250/RT. If you're staying in town, and don't plan to get all around the island, you can get along without it.

Good luck. Think you'll enjoy it.
