Nantucket - Affordable Lodging?
 

Anyone know of affordable housing in Nantucket for July/August?

We are looking to pay $40-$75 for 2 people -looking for a clean safe place - nothing fancy

ARE YOU SERIOUS?? 45.00 will get you a round of hotdogs and pepsi's for two.Lodging on the other hand really expensive.Like id say around 150 for an inexpensive place.200 225 for a fancy place good luck on that budget Your Gonna need It And did you say safe ? lol where sre you from Do you know anything about Nantucket? Are there any hostel type places in Nantucket?

I asked a question. No need to jump all over the post. I find that sometimes when you ask, you can get some good places not advertised. I received similar reactions when I posted for Rome and Greece hotels in summer time (crazy to get anything good under 100 Euros), but after some searching and asking around, we managed to find great clean places for significantly less

The difference between Rome, Greece, Boston, Timbuktu and many other places versus Nantucket is that, being an island, one can not spread out or stay in a more distant location to save money.

Another difference is that Nantucket is a vacation destination for people with money to spend - not a place where people go for history, culture, etc. - but for vacation - or they maintain a second home there. Because of high property values, clean, simple, inexpensive places really don't exist.

Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and many places on Cape Cod, because of this, have great difficulty attracting the large numbers of summer workers they need to run restaurants and hotels/inns. Therefore, they must pay them much higher wages and/or provide housing for them - a further explanation for high costs or everything. We camped on Marth'a Vineyard many years ago and even the campground was very expensive!

If you are considering Nantucket for a vacation, you will either have to up your budget considerably or chose another destination. If you are coming for another reason, I can't really offer much hope.

Martha's Vinyard has a campground, which could be another option.

there are hostels on both Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, but they tend to book up fast in the summer - reserve ahead.

oh, and outside of the hostels, $100 a night for a dump would be considered a bargain. There are NO unsafe places though. Neither island has basically any crime - the locals don't lock doors, and often leave the keys in the ignition of their car. It's that kind of place.

The islands are also the kind of places where sales of relatively small plots of land on the water for over 10 million attract no attention. That is why most of us who see your post literally chuckle.

I'd also like info on "affordable lodging" in Nantucket, though our budget is $200 or less. We're hoping to go there next spring. We're not big b&b folks. Thanks, annieladd

As the owner of a summer house on Nantucket, I would encourage you to go. It really is a beautiful place.

I think you might have to spend more than you state, but you don't have to spend big bucks to stay there.

I also don't agree that it is not a place where people go for history or culture. Nantucket is rich in history and has several very good museums, including the newly renovated Whaling Museum.

As for dining and other activities, we have eaten in some of the best restaurants on the island and sometimes shop, but our favorite times have been spent on the bike paths, walking the moors, or eating a picnic meal on the beach.

The hostel idea is a good one. It is in a quiet spot near the water. I haven't been inside, but I think it is well-maintained.
