naming the new Tappan Zee bridge
Here is a petition to name the new Tappan Zee Bridge after Pete Seeger.
He devoted years and years to cleaning up the Hudson River, which is what the bridge spans.
Please consider signing, and pass this along.

Signed another petition

A friend from the area had told me that, when approached about naming the Walkway Over The Hudson for him, Pete Seeger didn't want that--would he want this?

I agree with beachplum

>>There seems to be a bit of cognitive dissonance in naming a bridge that will carry millions of cars (to say nothing what it will do to the Hudson bed) after Pete Seeger, an avid environmentalist. He didn't even want a walk-way over the Hudson named after him and now a bridge of gigantic proportions?

>> A part of the Hudson, sure, or even parklands along its shore but not such a bridge that has been the center of controversy.

nanabee Feb 2nd, 2014 06:56 AM

There must be another way to honor this great man who was also an avid environmentalist.

Well, the bridge is going in, like it or not. It's being replaced because the old TZ is rotting. Most of the controversy is because of the cost.
Whatever its environmental impact, it is less so because of all the work Pete Seeger did to create awareness of the need to care for the Hudson.
This is a powerful way to keep his memory alive and his work ongoing.
BTW- the plans show bike/walkways on the new bridge.

People seem to know what the dead want, when they rarely knew what they wanted when they were alive.

I think it is important that kids ask who was Pete Seeger.

It would be a great injustice to name a billion dollar plus pollution channel after Pete seeger... how about a bird, or a preservation area, or a waterway...?

NGail Feb 4th, 2014 03:10 PM

No need to demonize the bridge - it's simply a necessary replacement for an existing bridge that is falling down.

Naming it after Pete Seeger is no more an insult than naming a bridge for George Washington or an airport for JFK.

"This bridge is your bridge, this bridge is my bridge, from..."

NGail Feb 5th, 2014 08:16 AM

Oh come on, Gary-
Pete Seeger lived in Beacon, NY. He probably crossed the TZ hundreds of times.
(In fact when I met him at a Clearwater concert in Nyack, he was heading home by car.)

IMDonehere Feb 5th, 2014 08:54 AM

"This bridge is your bridge, this bridge is my bridge, from..
That's Woody, not Pete.

garyt22 Feb 5th, 2014 09:20 AM

It is widely believed that Woody and Pete were the SAME person in disguise... I don't think they were ever seen in the same room at the same time...

"One ton tomato, I ate a one ton tomato... One Ton Tomayyyto..."

IMDonehere Feb 5th, 2014 12:19 PM

Actually Woody wrote This Land Is Your Land in response to God Bless America. Woody that God Bless did not include all Americans and was unrealistic. There is a verse of This Land which is rarely sung:

Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property,
But on the back side it didn't say nothing —
This land was made for you and me.

I'm voting against the bridge naming based on my encounters with him. He was a very modest man. Although, I agree something should be named after him so people ask "Who was Pete Seeger"?

NGail Feb 5th, 2014 02:07 PM

Sure, Pete Seeger was a modest man. He probably would not have wanted anything to be named after him. A memorial is for those of us who are here after him, as a way of keeping his name and his work alive.
Would we want to name the bridge - or anything - for a vain person who lobbys for it?
A local memorial - like a park - would be nice too.
But naming the bridge for him is the most powerful way to reach the greatest number of people for years to come.

garyt22 Feb 5th, 2014 04:21 PM

Then petition to change the Hudson to the Seeger River...

Fra_Diavolo Feb 5th, 2014 04:58 PM

And while you're at it, change the "RFK Bridge" back to the Triboro, or at least the "RFK Triboro."

IMDonehere Feb 5th, 2014 05:12 PM

How many names does the Ed Koch 59th Street Feelin' Groovy Queensboro Bridge have?

NGail Feb 5th, 2014 05:55 PM

Oh well- Kennedy Airport back to Idewild too?
