Name Your One Best Cheap-Eat, Good Food in NYC

Please tell your favorite cheap eat in NYC, that has good food. Thanks.

PS - Pls don't say your own house! Looking for restaurants! ;-)

MrZagat Jul 19th, 2002 10:26 AM

Favorite is Ninth Street Market (Ninth Street between First and SEcond Avenue). Not cheap, but relatively inexpensive for a nice dinner in NY.

Ted Jul 19th, 2002 10:27 AM

Just about every restaurant in the East Village offers great value -- high quality food at very reasonable prices. Go Sushi on St. Mark's Place is a good example.

Do you have a specific area, price range, or type of cuisine in mind?

NYC Jul 19th, 2002 10:32 AM

Probably midtown to downtown as far as location. No particular price range in mind...but not pricey as Trattoria Del Arte or say, Remi, or Le Cite. Good, inexpensive eats. Sit down, of couse, and wine nice too ;-)

Leonard Jul 19th, 2002 10:34 AM

No question -- Papaya King.

Elfie Jul 19th, 2002 10:37 AM

Oh no, not Papaya King, please don't tell them that! Eeewww!! If you want "sit down" truly cheap eats your best bet is to find a coffee shop, the old-gashioned Greek-style kind with a zillion things on the menu. Other types of restaurants will me mid-range to high-end. There's always pizza, you can sit in most pizza places but the decor in most isn't exactly charming. Greek-type coffee shops are usually good, reasonable and they're scattered all over the city.

Come on, Fodorites, you can do it!

Ok...one step above a coffee shop....and below "Daniel"...!

Like Joe Allen, Molyvos, Heartland Brewery, La Bonne Soup......

MERCI.

Claire Jul 19th, 2002 10:46 AM

My favorite "cheap-eat" is Planet Thailand, if you like Thai food. It's in Brooklyn but fairly easy to get to by train.

VIllage, has $24 3 course prix fix all night on sundays and mondays. very good.
As already said, many others in the E. Village.
L'Annan, various locations, Vietnamese food. also cafe espanol - various locations in the village.
Brazilian restaurants in the theater district, I think mostly on 46th st.
Haven't tried this yet but Dervish, turkish food in theater district looks interesting.
take the subway 1 or 2 stops into queens, a huge variety of ethnic foods (argentine, greek, indian, seafood), very inexpensive (Long Island City, Astoria, Jackson Heights).

Heartland Brewery?!? That's gotta be some of the *worst* food in Manhattan! If that's your idea of cheap eats, you can't go wrong -- everything is comparable or a step up. But the beer is good.

ingrid Jul 19th, 2002 02:12 PM

Snack - 105 Thompson St. between Prince & Spring. Mostly Greek, but light, non-greasy Greek, and lots of veggie options and choices of wine by the glass.
Island Burgers and Shakes, Ninth Avenue at 51st Street. Chicken is GREAT! Don't plan on any atmosphere, though!

Florent in the meat packing district. Arrive before 7:00 for a $20 prix fixe bistro dinner -- skirt steak with dijon sauce, potatoes, vegetables, dessert and coffee. Or order a la carte, prices are still good.
Sit outside, the food and people watching are great. For what you're getting, it's a DEAL.

suzanne Jul 20th, 2002 07:36 AM

I was at Heartland Brewery last night. Food was mediocre and more than I'm used to spending for bar food. As for the beer, the oatmeal stout was downright AWFUL (compared to a yummy Guinness) but the apricot beer was very nice, though ridiculously priced ($4.75 for a HALF pint!).

Los Dos Rancheros Mexicanos on 29th & 2nd Ave (I think:)
Like being in a cantina in Mexico, loud jukebox,no English spoken, great authentic Mex food.and CHEAP!
