Name of Town on the west side of Tappen Zee bridege? (or, why does Mapquest stink?)

I'm trying to get directions off Mapquest to Williamsburg, but when I put in Tarrytown NY, Mapquest gives directions to go over the GW bridge, something no one in their right mind would do. Most people would go over the Tappen Zee then south through N.J.

Can anyone tell me the name of the town on the other side of the Tappen Zee? I want to put that in and see if Mapquest gives me the route I'm looking for. I'm starting from Weston CT but still think over the Tappen Zee is my best bet to avoid traffic.

Also, does anyone have recommendations for sites other mapquest for directions? Thank you!

Go to RandMcnally.com for direction options.

P.S, just heard on the radio that today they are starting a MAJOR refurbishment of the Tappan November, so check on that first. GWB may not be as dumb an idea as you'd think...

Thanks, I was thinking of Nyack, I'll try Rand Mcnally intstead of Mapquest. Mapquest may give the shortest route in miles, but certainly not in time!

I'm leaving next week, so hopefully there isn't any construction now. Are there any sites which list major construction projects along interstates?

Mapquest doesn't stink...you need to understand how to use it.

Thanks Jen, That recommendation for Rand Mcnally was great, it gives you options for fastest, shortest, etc, driving directions, UNLIKE mapquest, which I do know how to use, but the Rand McNally was easier. Just my opinion though.

Actually, MapQuest DOES stink -- it is chronically wrong and even when right, obscures or omits important street names in favor of irrelevant ones. It gets my home 2 blocks west of where it actually is, places Duke University a few miles from where it is, put my mother-in-law's street where there is nothing but swamp, etc. etc. etc.

When I use MapQuest, I ALWAYS use it as a first-pass to get a general idea of where something is and then ALWAYS use another map with it for the reliable information retreets, etc.

Thanks to Jen for the suggestion of Rand McNally. I never thought to use them. Just tried a sample run and it was very clear. I've also found Mapquest to be very confusing and horribly unreliable. But I have had better luck with Yahoo maps.

Nina -- I've found that Mapquest stinks especially for traveling around the NY area (perhaps other urban areas are similar) because it is so literal. Mapquest will always give you the shortest distance, even when no one in their right mind would go that way due to traffic. Your example is a perfect one -- it might be a couple of miles shorter, but no one would take all the traffic through the city to the GW when they could go over the Tappan Zee.

Good luck!
