Going to the big apple in Oct., what should I see & do?

Gee, off the top of my head, I can't think of anything. Sorry.

Just back from New York. Everything is closed. There is nothing to do there. Go to Presque Isle instead.

Things for you to do in the big apple:<BR><BR>My windows need cleaning.<BR><BR>My dog needs to be walked.<BR><BR>And you could also visit my grandmother. She says she's lonely.<BR><BR>Oh, maybe you could lower the crime rate a bit while you're here.<BR><BR>Hope you have a good time.

Golly, Joe -- why were all those folks so snippy? I'll be in NYC in Oct too and would have welcomed some info about festivals or special events happening then. Have a good trip.

Everyone is "snippy" because Joe obviously hasn't done a whit of research. Gee, but the Destinations section herein is chock full of recommendations? Or, he could so a search, or just scroll down. Why, oh why, would anyone bother to help the deliberately lazy?

Choosing not to help someone is one thing... being "smart" and rude, and putting people down for no reason, is quite another. <BR>Joe, I am from Australia and have only been to New York twice (it's just the greatest place, how I envy you and Budette!), so I can't give you a great deal of help, but here is one idea to start you off: contact Big Apple Greeters on their website (www.bigapplegreeter.org/) and ask them to take you in hand. On our first full day in Manhattan we were met at our hotel by one of their Greeters, who spent half a day with us (no cost)showing us around. We felt at home right away, and if there are any special events you ought to know about, your Greeter will surely pass on the info. We didn't know what we wanted to see first, so we left it to the Greeter, and she took us across the Brooklyn Bridge, which turned out to be something I had always wanted to do but would never have thought of for myself. We had five wonderful weeks in the US, but we never had a more enjoyable day than this one. Go for it!

the only thing better than informative is funny. that's why i try to check in on fodors at least once a day. Where is Presque Isle anyway. Can I get a room with a view? Anyway Joe, just hit the streets of soho, the village, fifth avenue, central park and whatever specific sights you want to take in.

Joe, as a native New Yorker, all I can tell you is be more specific! Where to go and what to do depends on your tastes and what you prefer! You can do just about anything you can think of in NY (laws providing of course). If you want to do the typical tourist things, then check DigitalCity.com for ideas.

Grateful, I like verbal humor as much as the next man, but I fail to see the fun in putting someone down when they are asking for assistance. We don't have many posts from Don Rickles on this site, unfortunately... and I think he picks on friends (with their permission) and not strangers. Also, he doesn't operate under a mask of invisibility, as most of the so-called "humorists" on this forum seem to find it necessary to do.

There is also a pretty good view from Liberty Island. The last time we were in NYC we did the hop on/hop off bus tours operated by Gray Line which were a pretty good way to get around the city. Get a copy of TimeOut NY for the week you'll be here. They will have some good things to do. Other than that..<BR>Have dinner in Little Italy<BR>Buy a watch in Chinatown (a Ralex maybe)<BR>Go to a few of the many museums<BR>Take a boat ride around the Island (it is an island Joe)<BR>Walk around Greenwich Village<BR>Take some informal walking tours..there are plenty of good ones for a few dollars at the most<BR>Go to Harlem and have a soul food lunch..yes it is safe<BR>Picnic in Central Park..weather permitting<BR>Go to Times Square at night<BR>See a Broadway Play..(forget Jackie Mason Jade obviously works there)<BR>Any one of a million other things are also available..Enjoy

Joe-<BR>Sorry to see all the nasty replies you've been getting.<BR><BR>The weather in NYC in October is usually sunny but brisk. Perfect for walking anywhere and everywhere. Especially the parks, Central, Fort Tryon/Cloisters and over the bridges. Brooklyn Bridge is a 1st choice. <BR><BR>I second the Empire State Building but I always prefer the view at night. Check their web site but the observation deck stays open late @10-11 PM.<BR><BR>The only organized tour I'd go on is the Circle Line boat. Hopefully in Oct it won't be as crowded as in the summer.<BR><BR>Finally, if your bored...you can always take some lessons at the Trapeze School (http://trapezeschool.com/newyork/TSNYhome.htm)<BR><BR>Have a great time on our small island!
