N.Y. and Skiing
We'll be in NY City the last week in April. Does anybody know of a place that still has skiing at that time of the year around the city? We don't mind traveling 2 or 3 hrs.<BR>Thanks in advance

Check out Hunter Mountain website. There your only hope for late April within 2-3 hours of NYC!<BR>JOHN

Thank you! I just checked their web site and I certainly hope that it will open the end of April. Do you have an idea as to when they closed this resort for the winter season?
|
According to Hunter's website: "Tentatively, we will be closing after skiing and riding on Sunday April 13th. If interest is still high, we will re-open on Good Friday, April 18th, and remain open through the Easter Weekend."<BR>Though it's out of your 2-3 hour range, Killington, VT is your best bet for late season skiing. http://www.killington.com<BR>

I will be difficult to find someplace that has good skiing that late in the season. I'm not sure how long the ride would be, although I'm sure it will be longer than 2-3 hours, but you may want to look into Vermont and you will probably need to go into northern Vermont for good skiing. If you're up to the drive, Jay Peak in northern Vermont has the highest elevation in Vermont and would therefore be the best bet for good snow that late.

We were at Mt. Snow Vermont about 2 weeks ago (and that is 4 hours from NYC). The conditions were awful. All slush, very heavy. If it is not going down below freezing at night on a consistant basis, don't expect to ski the last week in April.

Today's Wall sT Jornal was an article on Spring Skiing - In the northeast it mentions Killington, VT, where the seasons goes through May 26<BR>That would be, though, a 5 hour drive from NYC.<BR>You will have to drive to Vt to get any April skiing.<BR>As an alternative to driving to VT, Jet Blue does fly from NYC to Burlington, VT

apologies for the typos
|
It's been rain in our area lately and that includes Hunter Mtn and Windham. We got a sprinkle of snow yesterday afternoon through last nigh. Nights have been freezing. Skiing would then be terrible. Unless we get a big snowstorm, don't bother with Apr skiing in NY this year.

DO you think that it will be at least good enough for tubing?
|
Not sure about the tubing. The cross country at Mt. Snow was adequate, but again slow and heavy. I would imagine tubing would be the same. And, again, this is 4 hours outside of Manhattan, without traffic. Killington is further.
