Mystic Seaport
 

Would appreciate suggestions on where to stay and what else to see when several brothers from Texas visit Mystic Seaport in late June for the WoodenBoat Show. It will be our first visit to the area.

We've passed through a couple of times and made do with a Days Inn, or something like that. However, one thing we enjoyed was a trip to the nearby Foxwoods Casino. Most hotels run a courtesy bus and give out coupon books offering discounted meals, free bets, special odds etc etc. The casino itself is a match for anything we've seen in Vegas. It makes for a very different night out after a rather Yankee day.

Otherwise, the Seaport itself is pretty fascinating and the town is a nice place to stroll around. The nearby village of Noank is stunning with some excellent eating places.

The Aquarium there is really good. Small but worthwhile. Agree with the trip to Foxwoods. You could even stay there and drive to Mystic.

Would you consider a B&B? I love the House of 1833. I've also stayed at the Mystic Hyatt and that was fine.

Agree with Foxwoods and the Aquarium. Olde Mystic Village is a nice place to explore as is downtown Mystic. I'm not sure what dates you're going to be in the area, but a 20 minute drive up Route 95 North is Westerly RI. On June 21st, the Chorus of Westerly is going to perform their 28th annual Summer Pops concert and fireworks display, which draws several thousand people to Wilcox Park in downtown Westerly. Bring a picnic and enjoy the music.

We really enjoyed seeing the boat show.I am sure you will have a good time.

I forgot to mention another great place to stay that we enjoyed. The Inn at Stonington is right on the water and about 15 minutes away from Mystic.

While your in Mystic you must go to Abbott's in nearby Noank for the best lobster role in the area.

Greetings TomK3! That can be a busy weekend, so I'd suggest you book your hotel soon - lots of good options presented here, some more spendy than others.

As far as other sights, I tend to steer people towards Mohegan Sun as opposed to Foxwoods (as it's more modern and airier), however the new MGM Grand addition to Foxwoods should be open by then to compete w/ the swankier side of Mohegan. Both places have great websites where you can investigae food options, too.

Since you're into boats you may want to see a boat of another kind - the US Submarine Force Museum is in nearby Groton, has free admissions, and a number of great WWII exhibits. As a bonus you can tour the Nautilus, the world's first nuclear submarine. www.submarinemuseum.org

Totally agree with kenm, the Summer Pops/firwroks rocks, and Wilcox park is just gorgeous.

As far as food goes, second the Abbott's for a true NE lobstah experience, and yes there are good food options in Mystic, you just have to nose around. For brekkie, Kitchen Little on Route 27 has a lovely seafood omelette but will be a total mob scene - head instead to Somewhere in Thyme (north on 27, then turn on Route 184, about a 6 minute drive from downtown). The cranberry-granola pancakes rock. for other eats, if you're in downtown Mystic head to Water Street and the Daniel Packer Inne downstairs bar - another warning that unless you go at an off-hour it will be packed, but nice seafood/burgers/local beers.

The Pequot Museum (history of native americans in the area) is awesome. The Mashantucket Pequot tribe (that runs the casinos) has sunk a lot of money into a small gem of a museum.

I second the museum. Abbott's was hard to find but 3 years later we are still talking about the lobster!
