Mystic - but not the aquarium or seaport
Looking to get away for a weekend in early December. Usually go to Newport, but we're thinking of changing it up a bit this year. Is downtown Mystic worth a weekend stay? Not interested in the aquarium or Mystic Seaport. Just want a nice place where we can walk to dinner, maybe stroll around town.
Other location ideas welcome.

Go 3 miles east to Stonington Burough, the inn there is quite nice and you can walk all over the area, out to the point and lighthouse, across the street to Noah's, or down to the sea food place, a block east to the beautiful street with 18th C homes. If you want a change in culture you can always go to the casinos, a half hour north.

I wouldn't dismiss Mystic out of hand. There are lantern light tours on most weekends in December, and the Seaport is decorated for the holidays, so I don't think it's something you'd want to avoid entirely. And there are a lot of things in the area, including two outlet malls and the casinos. Staying in Mystic doesn't mean you have to be there every waking moment.
But if your plan is simply to park the car and never get out again, I'm not sure there's enough to interest you for a whole weekend, particularly if you are avoiding Mystic's two main points of interest.

Been to Newport several times. Stonington was on my radar, but couldn't seem to find good info. I did tonight, tho. I think that's where we're heading for a change. Thanks for the insights.
