Myrtle Beach weekend
I am going to be in Myrtle Beach for a long weekend in May due to a work convention. Hopefully I will have one full day to sight see. Have never been to S.C. before. Love history, nature etc. What should I not miss?

I would suggest Brookgreen Gardens. It is just south of Myrtle Beach and well worth the trip. You can also check out MyrtleBeach.com for other ideas.

It depends on what you mean by "historic". If you like walking through small, coastal towns, then Georgetown and Pawley's Island would fit the bill. There are also various state parks in the area. If you want to make a long day of it, then heading south to Charleston (about 2 hours?) would have tons of history. I personally would recommend getting several books on the area, pick several points of interest, but mostly just enjoy driving in the low country. Mike Honeycutt |
When in May?
The reason I ask is that May hosts two motorcycle events: Harley Bike Week May 12-21, then Bikefest over Memorial Day weekend. These are huge events, with several 100,000 people, if not actual bikes. If you are here during either Bike event, getting away from it all is going to be a good idea. NinafromCT is right on the money with Brookgreen Gardens. Other possbilities are: Huntington Beach State Park, right across the highway (17) from Brookgreen Gardens. Hobcaw Barony, a little further south on 17, just before you cross the bridge into Georgetown (and Mike is correct about Georgetown's having a neat little waterfront). Here's the link: http://hobcawbarony.org/ And though it might sound cheesy, it's not. Carolina Safari Jeep Tours is a great way to get to know the suprisingly rich history of this area. (843) 497-5330. The guides are great (they may not operate if it's the middle of bike week though). Have a great time! |
When are you going? You may need to know that Mytle Beach has 2 separate Bike Weeks in May.

mrsd2fan,
no harm, no foul. The sound and fury of bike weeks is worth emphasizing. |
