Myrtle Beach to Atlanta
What is the best route from Myrtle Beach to Atlanta? and how long is the trip? Will be leaving Myrtle Beach on a Friday morning.
|
The best route is to go out Kings Hwy to I-20 and follow I-20 all the way to Atlanta. (go to mapquest.com and click on "directions" and then skip the addresses, just put in "Mrytle Beach" to "Atlanta" and it will give you the directions. The trip will take approx. 6 hours.

Kings Hwy won't get you to I-20.
Basically, you have two options to get to I-20. Which one to take depends on where you are staying. If you are staying in the northern part of MB (I'd say anywhere from about 48th Avenue north), best to take Highway 22 (the Conway bypass) to Highway 501 and then proceed as per the mapquest directions. If you're staying south of 48th, you could just get on 17 By-Pass and then take 501 through Conway. Another thought is this. When you get near Florence (which is where you pick up I-20), you can go the way mapquest suggests, or you can take Route 327 to I-95, and then head south on I-95 to I-20. This is quicker (I've done both) and exposes you to a lot less stop and go traffic. |
Ditto beachdweller.
I didn't respond because I didn't remember the road #'s. Basically, I go on autopilot. Coming FROM Atlanta, it's best to continue on 95 past Florence and then take that little dogleg to 501. Whether or not you need to use the bypass / 22 depends on where you are staying in Myrtle Beach. 6 long tiring hours. I hate the drive. |
We live in Atlanta just got back from MB a few days ago. We took the route mentioned by beachdweller. It was 6.5hrs getting out there but that's because we hitting the tail end of rush hour in Atlanta. We made it home in just over 5.5 hrs.
It's a booooring drive!! |
Definitely use beachdweller's directions. That's what we always do. The new bypass is so wonderful!
And, yes, it is a boring drive. Worth it going...but a pain in the ar$$ when you have to come home! |
I agree with everyone--the drive home after a vacation makes me wish teleportation, a la Star Trek, was a reality.
But at least you have a game to play on I-20. It's called how fast can I go before: (a) I get arrested or (b) my better half notices the trees seem to be going by a whole lot faster than usual. ;-) |
Bchdweller--It's for reason (b) that OWJ2 won't let me drive--but if I did, I bet I could make the trip in 5 hrs assuming (a) didn't occur :D
|
OWJ, I'm not sure. I try and I still can't make it in 5 (from your neck of the woods at least). I do have a bit of a head start now - and I really appreciate it, especially on the way home.

my best time from the Arcadian Shores section just north of MB to Atlanta city limits was about 5 hours 15 minutes. Mrs. Beachdweller was napping as we flew along I-20, so she didn't notice (b).

That is a miserable drive.
It is six hours or so of just hauling ass down the interstate. |
Yeah, it is miserable on the interstate, but the drive from Florence to the beach takes about 3 days, doesn't it? Seems that way to me.
