Myrtle Beach in 5 days-Where to eat?

Fodorites~My SO hits Myrtle Beach in 4 days for a week long conference. Most dinners and lunches will be associated with the conference but I'm sure a respite will be needed. Any suggestions for great food(dives and high temples)?

Budman Mar 31st, 2005 04:56 AM

Hi Pam,

Where the conference is located will depend upon where the recommendations will be. The Myrtle Beach Grand Strand stretches 30-40 miles.

If staying downtown, Broadway on the Beach is a great place to stroll and shop. My favorite place for happy hour is Liberty Steakhouse and Brew Pub. Great 1/2 price apps, and their oatmeal stout is wonderful.

Topping for recommendations from some locals. ((b))

Is this pinotpam? Where is your SO staying? I noticed while we were down last week that several places had signs that said..."yes, oysters are in season". Often, when we are there we go to a place called Rockefellers(on Hwy. 17 in North Myrtle) for happy hour oysters or out to Key West Grill at Broadway at the Beach for their happy hour. There's another place at Broadway where we have gone and done oysters, but cannot remember the name.
Also, we always go to Calabash, NC, for some great "Calabash" fried shrimp, oysters and flounder. Good night Mrs. Calabash.
Maybe beachdweller or GoTravel will see this and give you some good recommendations. Both of them know "the" places to go!
Your SO probably will not want to do any of the buffets on restaurant row.

One of our all-time favorites is Chantilly's in the Patricia Grand Hotel. (NOT the north location).
This is a beautiful place overlooking the water and although any meal is nice there, breakfast is our favorite.

beach_dweller Mar 31st, 2005 12:22 PM

you've got some good recommendations so far. There are so many places to choose from.

I agree with iceeu2 about avoiding the buffets. I am just not a fan, especially as there are SO many good real restaurants.

Here are a few other suggestions.

Dives:

Duffy Street Fish Shack (locations in ocean drive sectin of NMB, main st. and Sea-Mountain hwy in Cherry Grove)

Biminis (Lake Arrowhead Rd., across from the Galleria shopping center between NMB and MB)

Bummz (oceanfront at about 17th Avenue North on Ocean Blvd in MB)

River City Cafe (on 21st Avenue North, between Kings Hwy and Ocean Blvd)

High Temples:

Collectors Cafe (in a strip shopping center on Kings Hwy between 79th Avenue and 76th Avenue North--Liberty Taproom is across the street; Liberty Taproom is a GREAT bar by the way).

Aspen Grille (also on Kings Hwy, at about 50th Avenue North or so--can't recall exactly, on your right as you head into MB from the north)

Martini's (in NMB on Kings Hwy, near the intersection with Main Street).

E Noodles & Co. (a dim sum place on 20th Avenue South, not really a temple, but too good to be a dive!)

Lattitude 22 (in Surfside, south of MB, oceanfront; great 3rd floor view; innovative food & drinks)

Now if you get down toward Pawleys Island, the dining is great there too. GoTravel knows the places there like no-one else: Frank's, Bistro 217, Louis's & the attached Fish Camp Bar, Orobosa's Low Country Cafe, etc. She can also steer you well as to Murrells inlet--it's probably sacriledge, but of the places we've tried there, we only really liked Flo's so far (none of the others were bad, just not good enough to pry us away from our MB favorites like the Pawleys restaurants do).

iceeu2 Mar 31st, 2005 02:20 PM

beachdweller...where and what is Martini's?
Also, pammer, Flo's in Murrell's Inlet is one of the places that had a sign saying oysters are in season.

My favorite place is Sea Captain's House and one of the few Myrtle Beach restaurants that is actually on (or even within view) of the beach. Great well prepared seafood! Not a buffet!!
For info visit...http://www.seacaptains.com/

Budman Mar 31st, 2005 04:24 PM

The Sea Captain's House is my Mom's favorite place. ((b))

maryanne1 Mar 31st, 2005 05:20 PM

I live here and Sea Captain's House is my all time favorite. A special everyday for lunch. Also for dining at night I like Joe's Bar and Grill.

beach_dweller Apr 2nd, 2005 06:44 AM

See? So many choices! I wouldn't disagree with any of the suggestions mentioned above. I like Sea Captain's House a lot too, especially for the lunch specials.

Maryanne1,

are you a long-time local? I am glad you mentioned Joe's (in NMB); every time we go we ask ourselves why we keep forgetting about this restaurant.

Iceeu2,

Martini's is on your left on Kings Hwy if you're heading North. I believe it is just beyond (North of) the intersection of Kings Hwy & Main St. It is a great, elegant restaurant--a little pricey for us, so a special occasion restaurant. Some italian style dishes, seafood, and of course, lots of different martinis (although a dry Bombay Sapphire is as far down the list as I ever get).

maryanne1 Apr 2nd, 2005 09:18 AM

Yes, I am a long time local. Retired teaching elementary school here.
Martinis is a small elegant restaurant good sevice and food here in N. Myrtle Beach. Only tried it last year, but was impressed. Not as varied a menu as Joe's Bar and Grill. We have a new Bone Fish restaurant here in N. Myrtle Beach which we also enjoy. Tonys is an old Italian restaurant here which is a favorite.
Captain's Plank is a favorite especially for the lunch buffet right here in Cherry Grove. Hoskins is also a favorite on main street Ocean Drive.
We have the chain ones such as Outback, K and W Cafeteria (very popular), Tgif, Applebys , Fizolis, Applebys, and I could go on.
Too many good places!! You asked about Myrtle Beach and the main one we mentioned there is The Sea Captain's House. Also Collector's Cafe is a very neat experience.

iceeu2 Apr 2nd, 2005 04:46 PM

My Maryanne...we had Easter Sunday lunch at Hoskins...yummy...and the rains kept us from having to stand in line as long as we usually do on Sundays when we are there.
Is Joe's Bar and Grill back behind where they have built the Olive Garden?

horatio Apr 3rd, 2005 01:01 PM

We were there 3 weeks ago and ate at Carrabba's, Sea Captain's, Landry's at Broadway on the Beach...the hotel recommended some pretty good places to us too but we did not go as we did not want to spend 20-30 on an entree...they were Joe's Grill, Greg' Norman's, chestnut Hill and Thoroughbred's.

maryanne1 Apr 3rd, 2005 01:06 PM

Yes, Joe's Bar and Grill is behind the new Olive Garden.

iceeu2 Apr 3rd, 2005 01:12 PM

We are going to have to try Sea Captain's House. You guys give it great reviews and the tripadvisor.com also give it great reviews.

PamSF Apr 3rd, 2005 01:32 PM

Thank you all! The list is flying to Myrtle Beach as I write this. I'll report back on what was tried. So far, the only for certain is a Myrtle Beach Pelican vs Wilmington Red Dogs(?) baseball game Thursday evening. I'm hoping for a review of the Sea Captain's.

GoTravel Apr 3rd, 2005 03:17 PM

Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet favorites:

Louis Fish Camp & Louis (so much fun to sit outside under the live oaks!)

Franks & Franks Outback

Landolfis (owners have family owned Italian Deli of same name in Newark New Jersey since 1872 and eating there you'll know why)

Pastoria 811

Creek Ratz (on the salt marsh with to die for views and great food)

Dead Dog Saloon (also on the salt marsh with great food and to die for food)

Russells (Murrells Inlet's version of Biminis but campier, the real thing versus imitations, sorry Chuck!)

Divine Fish House & Wahoos (on the salt marsh with excellent upscale dining and views, sitting outside at Wahoos makes you think you are in the islands)

Bovines (next door neighbor to Divine Fish House, more casual but still nice)

Old World Cafe (excellent Italian in strip mall)

Gulfstream Cafe (situated between ocean and marsh with views of both serving excellent seafood)

That is all I can think of right now.

beach_dweller Apr 4th, 2005 08:21 AM

To quote early Keanu: Whoaaa!

Go knows Murrells & Pawleys!

Bimini's an imitator? Say it isn't so :-) Seriously, no harm done GoTravel.

I'm interested in Russells now--is it anything like the Gazebo at Hot Fish Club? We stopped there for a drink one evening on the way back from Pawleys and thought that was pretty cool.

GoTravel Apr 4th, 2005 02:41 PM

Just trying to get your goat Chuck!

No, Biminis is not an imitator, after all it has been around since 1985 or 1986 and has great food.

Russels is like sitting in a tree house. Great for fried seafood and smoked fish dip. Go one night when you can sit outside and listen to the Jimmy Buffet type person strum his guitar.

GoTravel Apr 4th, 2005 02:45 PM

Forgot to add that the Hot Fish Club is a blast on Friday and Saturday night! Inside/Outside barefoot dancing to a live band.

There is also a place in Pawleys Island behind the Pawleys Island Deli that used to be Howard Muellers Island Deli. The Mullets usually play there on an outside stage and they light the place up with tiki torches and you dance in the sand. Ask anyone in Pawleys for the old Howard Muellers and they will tell you where. Under the stars and live oaks great live music.

I don't know if you've done this or not but Brookgreen Garden has live things all summer long at night. They sell picnic baskets and bottles of wine and six packs. Talk about a fantastic place to sit under the stars!
