My Mother and Mother-in-law are off to Hawaii -- I need advice.
My mother is flying to Guam to visit family members in Feb. My mother-in-law and a friend have decided to fly with her as far as Hawaii where they would all spend a few days before mom goes on to Guam. (mother-in-law and freind will spend 3 more days on Hawaii) The Hilton had been recommended to them but the price per night puts it out of their league. They would like to share a room. They are all in their 70's - people watching beachside and a few tours plus a nice dinner or two are what they have in mind. Can anyone recommend a nice spot for my moms. Thanks

Unless the regular rooms have been redone over the past couple of years, the interior of the Hilton Hawaiian Village is overrated anyways.(outside is very nice) I don't know what your budget is but the Hawaiian Regent has been a reliable standby for many of year. In the 70's it was a deluxe property...now it would rate about a B. Excellent location across the street from Waikiki Beach, right in the middle of everything. Across the street is not a drawback as this is a stones throw from the sand. They will be one block from the Kodak Hula Show if they decide to go, beside the Holiday Inn and the Pacific Beach hotel. Now, when you call direct...their 800 number do ask what their entertainment rate is as they usually carry it. Don't worry if you do not have one(entertainment card)...we can tell you how to get one. It involves an 800 number adn a fee of about 30.00 dollars...much less than what your savings coulc be.

Jan, the Hawaiian Regent underwent renovations to one of their towers last year, making the rooms in that tower very nice. It very recently became a Marriott property, so you know the quality is consistent with the Marriott name. OK, well, I thought the hotel quality was fine even BEFORE the takeover.

It has been 5 years since we have visited Waikiki so I am a bit out of touch. One block left of the Regent is the Kodak Hula show which is not a must do but is free and kind of cute for a first time visitor. The Regent, ages ago , used to have a terrific restaurant for buffets on the main floor but that could all be changed now.

Jan,
I recently stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki; the rooms were a decent with the exception of some "thin" walls and noisy neighbors; annoying, but not a major problem. It is right smack in the middle of Waikiki where they will have a short walk to shopping and restaurants (great little coffee house around the corner for breakfast/lunch). There is also a service desk to book tours and the concierges were all very helpful and knowledgable.
Also, check out www.travel-hawaii.com. They have a trip calculator for several properties in Hawaii. I used them for some interisland travel and they were very good.
