My Maine (wo)man.

What do you advise as far as things to do traveling up the coast by car in Maine? Top 3 things that you think of. Thanks!

1. eating lobster
2. searching out a place to sit with binnoculars, a book and some snacks. Last week we spent about an hour at a wildlife preserve on a beach with only about 5 other cars. There's places like that the average tourist never visits.
3. short, easy hikes like the one Virginia mentioned to Owls Head Light.

I also like to plan our visit around an event. One year it was Bath's Heritage Days - great parade, craft fair and homemade pies. This year it was the Camden Garden Club's annual home and garden tour. DH likes the weekend events at Owls Head Transporation Museum. Once we were very lucky to sit next to some locals having lobster at a small lobster shack. One guy was complaining about working for some summer people. Tim Sample couldn't have told a better story. Last weekend we met a guy who used to work on a Lombard Log Hauler (plus there were 2 haulers on display).

Just an FYI:

Lots of Route 1 is NOT within sight of the ocean, and is slow going through little towns or pine trees. Not necessarily unpleasant, but probably not what people expect!

1. Lobster shacks
2. Lobster shacks
3. Acadia NP

There's a schooner boat trip that travels off the coast that I wanted to take on the next trip. I don't have the info anymore, but maybe someone else does. I'd love to see the coast from the water too.
