Must See New Orleans tours
 

What tours would you recommend and why. And where can these tours be booked? Should I book them before I get there? Thanks!

For walking tours, we really liked the Historic New Orleans Walking Tour Co. We took their cemetery and voodoo tour, which met at a cafe in the French Quarter, then the guide took us through the FQ to the St Louis No. 1 cemetery, to Congo Square and Louis Armstrong park, and then to a voodoo temple on Rampart. It was great - guide was very informative, told great stories, and was a lot of fun. Very interesting tour. No reservations needed, just meet at the appointed time. You can look them up online. Our hotel also had brochures. We are planning to take at least 1 walking tour with them on our next trip - definitely the French Quarter tour and maybe the Garden Distric tour as well.

We also took a plantation tour outside the city - to Laura and Oak Alley plantations with Spinato Tours. That was a lot of fun too. Our group was small - only about 10 people - and the guide gave us all sorts of information and told stories on the way out to the plantations. Once we were at the plantations, we joined regularly scheduled tours of those plantations. On the way back, the guide gave restaurant recommendations and had all our mouths watering - LOL. We made the reservation for this tour the day before we went. We just asked one of the people at our hotel about plantation tours and she recommended a couple. We picked the one we wanted and she made the reservation for us.

We took a swamp tour with Capt Nick's Wildlife Safaris. It was fun - on the pricy side, but it was a private tour and lasted about half a day. He picked us up at the hotel and we went south of town about 45 minutes or so to Bayou Barataria, stopping at a deli on the way for po boys and snacks to take on the boat. The boat was a small flat-bottomed boat with an outboard motor and we took it out along a large channel past homes and shrimp boats, then cut into some small channels and cruised around there. Really beautiful and we were the only ones out there. We saw a lot of birds and a couple alligators. Nick cut the motor a few times so we could just drift around on the current. Really nice way to spend an afternoon. We had some good conversations about the ecology of the area, cultural stuff, some history. It was good. On the way back to the marina when we got to the large channel, he openned up the throttle on the motor and we went really fast :) Little adrenalin rush to round things out.
