Must Have Buys From NYC?
What are some quintessential items to bring back from NYC? Things that speak loud and proud, I love NYC!
|
An official (not knock off) I Love NYC tee shirt.
Black & White Cookies Bagels A sursy from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (a Christmas ornamant perhaps?). A New York Yankees ball cap. A snow globe. Something from Pearl River. Something from Bloomingdales in the "Big Brown Bag". |
Personally I cannot go home without something from Zabars - usually chocolate babka.
|
Mine is a new something from Fishs Eddy - but that's more of a whisper.
|
LOL starrsville, I'm across the street shopping at Pearl River!
|
Many visitors like to visit Canal Street for "cheap" sunglasses, watches, scarves ("Burberry" nova check pattern), etc.
(Please, no temper tantrums about "illegal" goods. Many/most of the goods are not "knock-offs" and are perfectly legal. And let he (or she) who is without sin cast the first stone anyway, okay? You do exceed the speed limit, huh? Jaywalk?) |
GoTravel: Where are you at? Does Pearl River have more than one location?
|
Speaking of the Little Brown Bag from Bloomie's, they have a whole series of Bloomingdale's brand gifts, including a tote bag that looks like the Little Brown Bag. Fun way to remember a trip. Here's a link:
http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalo...oomies%20Gifts I'm sure Macy's has many of the same type of items. Both stores usually have unique Christmas ornaments with store logos on them. |
Pearl River is on the west side of Broadway north of Canal, across the street from Yellow Rat Bastard.
I believe that is the only location. |
Sorry, I was thinking it was across from Fish Eddy.
There used to be another Pearl River I beleive on Mott Street. It was the dingy original. |
Sorry to disagree GoTravel, but I think as of right now you want a NY Mets hat!!!! :)
|
ABC Carpet/Home is across from Fishs Eddy. Sort of. Down a bit.
I know you want one of those kaffiyehs that Yassir Arafat wore on his head. Drape one around your neck and you will be the picture of Breakfast Club chic. |
I would say Grandma's Coffee Cake and Babka from Zabar's, but I can order them on line, so I'll take home a bag of kasha knishes and a heart full of memories.
|
Speaking of knish, I think I have only had it one time. I would very much like to try a bowl of matzo ball soup. Any suggestions on a great deli for this?
|
I used to like the Second Avenue Deli, but I haven't been there in years. Here are some ideas:

I bought a frame from a flea market in Chelsea and then a black and white photograph of Central Park in the winter at a street fair outside the Museum of Natural History-put them together and the perfect reminder sits in my kitchen.
|
How do you tell if you have an authentic I love NYC shirt?
Where do you buy the official ones from? |
I think a visit to Magnolia Bakery on Bleeker St. is a must. The cupcakes are wonderful - a real treat!
|
Used to be: a bag full of goodies from Second Avenue Deli purchased while the meter was running and the cab was outside waiting for your trip to the airport
A snow globe(AGREE) An umbrella from the Met A Kate Spade or Prada knock off from Canal Street Your metro passes Two rolls of film shot of the Bethesda Fountain and 1/2 a roll (in b&W) of the Imagine Mosaic. Nedicks and a bag of Wise potato chips |
There are some really great (imo) things at the gift shop in the Met Museum, especially for this time of year. There are great calendars, diaries/agendas, t shirts, books about NYC, coffe mugs etc.
