I am going to Hawaii soon, and my neighbor said that I should bring some mumus because that is what all the Hawaiian women wear. Is that true? Can you find any reasonably priced ones in Honolulu? Do they wear them just at home, or to the store and to restaurants, too?

some Hawaiian women wear them plenty do not. Look similar to the country maxi dresses of the seventies. Women wear them to work as well as home but I would not say the majority of women wear them. You will see when you go no need to buy unless you like once you are there.

My friend's wife had the same thought a year ago. She ended up making her own out of a seed sack that she bleached, then tie dyed to make hibiscus patterns. She practically wore it until it rotted off her back on their trip to Maui!! Locals raved about it and wanted to know where she got it. Werd.

I've been to hawaii many times but have never purchased nor worn a mumu. There are tourists who purchase them there and have their husbands purchase and wear a matching shirt which I find hilarious. Why in the world do couple dress alike? They sharing a brain too? I notice that tourists who wear the mumus are mostly older women though it is not true of locals. I think they look like housedresses.

I've lived here all my life and I have not worn a muumuu since 1988. There are some very nice, fashionable fitted ones at Macy's or Hilo Hattie's, though, if you want to purchase one while you are here. Women who DO wear them, wear them to work, to restaurants, pretty much everywhere. But no, don't buy one unless you REALLY want one.

Actually it is true. And you better buy plenty because you shouldn't wear one more than once on your trip. But hurry because they are scarce this time of year.

Honestly, I cannot remember anyone wearing a mumu when we were in Hawaii. Maybe I was not looking, but daytime wear to me is shorts, cotton capri's or cotton slacks.

I just got back from Hawaii last Sunday. We stayed on both Oahu and Maui. I don't recall any women wearing mumus. There were lots of guys wearing aloha shirts and women wearing Hawaiian print dresses and skirts. However, those big "house coats" were not a fashion statement at all!!

I think Marlon Brando looks good in his mumu. They're popular in Frech Polynesia too where he lives and give a guy good ventilation.
