Multi-leg airline tickets?
 

I'm planning a long summer trip. I checked rates on Orbitz and on Delta. We were going to do a triangle in travel with 3 airports, but found it cheaper to do a 4 leg trip coming back to our home airport between the 2 destination cities (almost like doing two round trip tickets).

But if we book it as one big multi-leg ticket, we save money. Are there problems with booking it this way? I've never done a multi-city ticket before.

As long as you fly all the legs (i.e. not skipping one leg in the middle), why would there be problem?

That's my thought...

Flight 1 - Home to Destination 1
Flight 2 - Destination 1 return to home
Flight 3 - Home to Destination 2
Flight 4 - Destination 2 return to home

There will be 2 or 3 days between flight 2 and 3 so we can rest at home.

I don't see any problem...I think the airline was just giving me a hard time.

and it's cheaper than buying 2 round trip tickets.

This must be some sort of anomoly in the system...it normally works the opposite.

Asside from the frustration of getting on and off aircraft and luggage transfer and nothing going wrong due to weather, I guess....but I hope you are talking about some big big savings?

Did you try booking on line directly with the airline, or with another service?

I do 3 leg tickets all the time, and have never encountered a 4 leg trip through the same city twice being cheaper.

lakeside77 - What an interesting question to which I do not know the answer. I'd like to know how it turns out and if it works. What 3 airports are involved?

The savings aren't substantial enough to take a chance on running into obstacles with the flights, so we are leaning more towards just purchasing 2 roundtrip tickets to ease the concerns.

I was playing with every combination to try to save money on the tickets, so this option kind of peaked my interest.
